I hear a lot of talk about cables with the number 80 in it when it comes to high performance dma enabled optical drives. Some say 80 pin while others say 80 wire, and then they think they are talking about the same thing. Are they, because the ones for sale that I come across online say 40pin/80wire?
Can somebody please clarify the difference between a 40 pin-80 wire cable and an 80 pin cable (if there is any)? How many wire would that one be? Is that 80 pins on each end or 40 pins on each end (40X2=80)?
If the 80 pin cable that everyone refers to is different than the one I have, the only one that I can find, the one that is called 40pin-80wire, then where can I buy a good one and at good price? The ones I come across I think are just like mine - 40pin/80wire.
40pin/80conductor - this is atleast what mine looks like -
Thanks in advance.

Both types of IDE cables have 40 pins. But one type has 40 wires and the other has 80 wires. Every other of the 80 wires is a gound to reduce crosstalk.

If it is a ribbon type cable, you can count whether it is a 40 or 80 wire cable. The 40 wire was for older slower components. Sometimes they are labeled for a CD reader/writer on the ribbon. Most newer cables will be 80 wire, but the round cables are harder to tell. I have never seen a round cable with 40 wires, but they probably exist. The smaller round cables are usually for the floppy drives, and are usually labeled as such.

It is 40 pin/80 wire cable. Many just slang it to 80 pin cable. As junkmalle said, every alternate wire in the cable is a ground wire. Because of this, this cable is better than thr older 40 pin/40 wire cable.

Most often the 80 wire ribbon cable has a blue or some other non gray color connector on the motherboard side.

here are some pics to help.

A lot of time now, if all three connectors are black, it's a 40-wire cable. If the three connectors are blue, grey, and black, it's a 80-wire cable. This hasn't, and probably will never be, always been true, but a generalization from what I've seen come with mainboards I've purchased and replacement cables from Dell, Gateway, etc at work.
