  1. I have some 1 hour tv shows that I captured to send to a friend. I edited out the coms so they are now 40mins each but they are big - like 3000MB. I would like to reduce them as much as possible since I will be uploading them to a server for her to download. Can anyone make any suggestions as to the best way to reduce them so I can send her the links

You didn't say what format they are in, but anyway....
I would try Xvid or Divx. If you can't get them small enough, maybe WMV.

You can create a short clip of maybe 5 minutes and try encoding it with different settings, encoders. VirtualDub and Xvid is a good place to start.
If it's MPEG, then VDMod. You have to see what quality you can live with.

This is assuming viewing on a computer.

MS Media Encoder, creates files that will play on any XP machine. No codecs for her to install. They have multiple preset profiles set up or you can customize your own. You can reduce as much as you want, even making a 1 hour video downloadable from a 56k but that requires making smaller files using smaller resolutions and lower bitrates.

Here's a 10 minute video I encoded for broadband users, about 50MB's. For this video I could have used a higher bitrate and resolution but I wwas more concerned about server bandwidth than the user.:

The same 10 minute clip for 56k users @8MB , what I did with this clip was reduce the framerate to 15fps effectively doubling the bitrate available for each frame. Even a 10fps video would not look that bad using 10fps and an even lower bitrate than I used here could produce a video that can be viewed in realtime by a 56k user.
