  1. which audio formats can you use for SVCD?

    Mpeg-1 layer 2 (MP2) only. Must be 44.1 KHz sampling rate.

    44.1k is the SVCD's specs, but if your source is 48kHz - just keep it 48kHz, no need to downsample to 44.1kHz.
    Some authoring software may bitch about out-of-specs audio, but trust me - it will play fine on every dvd player capable of playing SVCDs.

    Well SVCD does support mpeg2 audio as well but few receivers support it. Using mpeg2 audio you can actually have as many as 7.1 channels but again, there's very little hardware support.

    Edit: No, wav will not be compatible and will probably play on few players if any.

    why would you want to use .wav audio on svcd?
    It would eat up more space than video...

    as everyone already told you:
    SVCD must have MPEG-1 Layer II audio if you want it to play on all players
