  1. I've noticed that DVD Shrink is a very highly rated tool, but what about Nero Recode.I have read on a website (Cant remember where) that Nero Recode is coded by the same author of DVD Skrink.Isn't it better to use Nero Recode because it is basically an updated and more functional version of DVD Shrink,it seems faster too.You also have the option to remove unwanted parts of the DVD,with DVD Shrink I cannot find this option without having to remove the menus, which I always like to keep.
    What do you think

  2. Your right Nero Recode is authored by the same person as DVDshrink.

I gave Recode a quick look but found it to be a messy looking version of shrink, I still prefer DVDshrink ver3.2 and use it all the time.

As regards to removing unwanted parts I use DVDremake Pro prior to using DVDshrink and find it very useful.
You could use VobBlanker and PGCedit to remove stuff as they are both free.
That's how I did it before using DVDremake Pro and now find that DVDremake is a lot easier to use.

In my opinion DVDshrink has a better looking interface than Recode, it's more logical and I will carry on using it at the moment, but may do some more testing with Recode later.

  3. Thanks for giving your opinion HARRYSPADGE.
Ive looked at the software you advised me on using to remove unwanted segments on DVD's before recoding with DVD Shrink.DVDremake looks to be the best choice because of its simplistic interface.I like easy to use software and VobBlanker and PGCedit at first glance look to be a little complicated,I'd have to use my brain
I may start testing DVD Shrink again, afterall many of the DVD producing pro's on this site recommend it over using Nero Recode.

I've only just noticed I spelt the subject title incorrectly

  4. Glad to be of some help.

Yes, VobBlanker and PGCedit look a bit daunting at first so if your not very techie, probably best to go with DVDremake.
As I said, it does pretty much the same thing and more, and is more user friendly.

There is a trial of DVDremake so best to give that a go first.

  5. So DVD Shrink and Nero Recode are written by the same guy? Impressive!

  6. Didnt know that they were written by the same guy. But I guess DVDShrink is much cleaner and better organised than Recode. Therefore its easier to use.

  7. DVDShrink is generally better imo. I would stick with it, and use other applications to do the other things for you. I always prefer applications to do one thing well, then loads of things semi-decent.

  8. HARRYSPADGE,I have been using VobBlanker and I am happy with it.
VobBlanker seems to remove the parts I dont want so I'm just wondering why I need PGCedit aswell. PGCedit looks way too complex at first glance

  9. I use PGCedit to hide some of the menu buttons for the features I have removed with VobBlanker, eg Audio menu button, Subtitle menu button etc.

  10. I only use recode, its quality and speed are much better than dvd shrink.

    Your probably right

    Look http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=45882

I think Nero Recode is the one I should go with, its a faster, updated version of Shrink and should continue to get better and the author deserves paying by Nero for making such a good tool
I dont blame the author for leaving Shrink and getting paid for the work

NERO RECODE is fast and once you get used to it its easy to use and the quality is great. 2 pass on my 1.2 GHz Athlon with Star Wars Ep 1 and 2 (2Hr + movies) took about 40 min each.

  13. Yes, that's right, it's faster than DVD Shrink (I didn't remeber this cause it's a long time that I don't make a DVD>DVD back-up).

I have been using DVD shrink in file mode for quite sometime w/ a resulting VIDEO_TS @ 4.35gb which always fits on a blank. Purchased Recode and the 3rd movie I backed up, also in file mode, (Troy) resulted in a 4.38gb folder. When I tried to burn it, got the msg that it was too big and wouldn't fit on the disk.

Tried it w/DVD Shrink and spot on at 4.35gb. So, for now, I'll go back to Shrink.

Anyone else experience this file size discrepancy ?

ill keep using dvd shrink because it rips and shrink

    recode only shrinks the dvd.

I didn't think Nero recode decrypted dvd, did an earlier version perhaps?

  19. They were the same but I think now they're not. I get MUCH better quality out of Recode 2. I compressed a movie at 62% and it was perfect. I got worse results from Shrink.

I also now use Nero Recode or Elaborate Bytes CloneDVD2 (a fantastic app in it`s own right)
to transcode any movie that requires less than 80% reduction. (movie with menu only)
Any more than that, I go straight to DVDRebuilder. (using CCE)

I agree that DVDremake Pro (my first "go-to" app) or VObBlanker,
are great to clean your back-ups prior to any of these.

With me, AnyDVD (always kept current) running in the background while
ripping with DVDFab Decrypter or DVD Decrypter is "just a given."
