Hey, thanks for the tip. I just started using Firefox today and did not know you could middle click to open a new tab. I've been right clicking and selecting new tab, such a pain.

Thank you Cobra for starting this thread/poll. If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have downloaded Firefox. So far I'm loving it. I was using IE prior to FFox.

To each his own I suppose. The reason I use FF is not because of better security. The reason I use FF is simple ergonomics. It's simply a more efficient browser for me.

That was my understanding. BTW - You can avoid taskbar clutter using IE by choosing to 'group similar taskbar buttons.' However, I imagine navigating the IE 'group' is not as fluid as the navigating the Firefox tabs.

If you use control-click on link, it will also open in new tab as well. So if you have 2 button mouse or have a flaky middle button you can use the CRTL key instead.

Shift-click opens link in new window.

My one gripe about FF is when I click my "back" mouse button it loads up the page while you are sitting at the top of the page, and THEN it goes back to the last spot you had on your screen.
Where with IE, when you hit the back button it automatically goes back to where you were on that screen while it is loading.

Just my .02 cents. It's a little thing, but still annoys me enough to not make me want to use it 100% of the time.

Not sure, but this might be part of Firefox's Cache management needing work.
I'm not an expert, but this is how I understand it, when you hit the backbutton, Firefox for some reason needs to reload almost the entire page from the internet, where IE is using it's Cache of the page much more efficiently and only has to download a small amount.

This cache managment thing is suppose to be fixed in Firefox Ver1.1 due out very very soon.

I've heard Opera has by far the best Cache managment and can reload revisited pages the fastest. Used it for about 3 days, but just liked Firefox that much better. Maybe if I was on dialup it would of swayed me the other way, but reloading pages on a cable modem isn't much of a problem.

Maybe someone can correct me or explain it better, but that's about the best I can do from what I've read.

FF is almost infinently configurable with extensions and add-ons. I really like the middle clcik open a new tab feature, especially since they load in the back ground. You can also create a folder that will open several tabs at once. Nice if you always start your day with the same set of sites.
Have any of you tried grease monkey (http://greasemonkey.mozdev.org/) ?
It can add little scripts that change site you are looking at. I only use it for a few sites, but I can see where people could really get wild with it.
One thing that hasn't been mentioned much is how good FF is at stopping popups and reducing ads. Makes for faster loads and cleaner pages.
You may also want to look at custom FF builds for added speed. There are moded builds specific to cpus. I use one for Athlons that made my Netflix surfing 3-4 times faster.

Shelby, I am not sure what you mean, or perhaps mine behaves differently. For example, if I am in the middle of a page and I click on a link and then click the back button, it returns to the middle of the page and loads from cache.

hmmm, your right, just tried mine and it went back to the same place I was on the first page( near the bottom)

I use IE because I'm lazy and don't want to learn another program. I also use IESpell spell checker with this site for posts and haven't found an equivalent for Firefox.

bumping this as I find the IE Tab extension great as you can have the best of both worlds. Yeah IE 7 is out (with tabs, wow this will attract all the FF users back! ) but again it's just not customisable like FF is. The IE extension allows you to load pages using the IE engine so any sites you have problems with when using FF are no more. It's a simple icon click to switch between the 2 engines but the beauty is that's it's all within FF 8)

using the likes of adblock & noscript extensions you can block annoying ads/graphics from the likes of afterdawn or stop all the crap some very legitimate sites throw upon you (you don't need to visit pr0n/warez sites to get annoyed by all the crap etc). If you use FF and don't have adblock you don't know what you are missing and noscript is a great bonus 8).

another extension I have is sessionsaver and that's a lifesaver. My PC crashed and I was posting something in a forum and had a few tabs open. When I restarted the PC it restored all the pages I had open in FF and even had my reply. Another is Image Zoom which allows you to resize pics with a simple click on your mouse and a roll of your scrollwheel. For my music I use FoxyTunes which put a little control panel in the status bar so I rarely ever load the actual media player window

people who use IE and only IE simply don't know what they are missing and with the likes of the IE extension that loads pages using IE I will rarely fire up IE anymore. There's plenty more you can do to FF and I don't think I'll be using IE 7 in the near future

it's funny how the results here show FF is the main browser by far yet site stats show a different story, but that's probably due to people here being more PC savvy 8)

FF because it works faster when I'm shaped to 64K and you can use the tab feature to open mutiple windows at the same time.

So whats the difference between Fire Fox, Mozella and Thunderbird ?

I use FireFox to look at porn. IE for everything else. My wife doesn't know what FF is and doesn't use it, so I can keep my porn sites handy in the history. I used to use Netscape for the same reason, but some porn sites don't work well with Netscape. :P

Overated: Firefox. While anything is better than Idiot Exploiter, Firefox is too stripped down a browser. Mozilla was a better package. Yes, you can add, but why? See below.

Underated: Opera. A combined browser and e-mail client. Why start & run two related programs? Why add features that are already included in Opera that Firefox lacks?

I would be willing to bet many don't know that Opera is completely free with NO ad banners.
Why are ones and zeros so complicated? Linear Video Editing was easier. Downloading & streaming are two different things.

That was the point. People wanted a stripped down browser that they could customize however they wanted it.

In what way is browsing the web related to reading and writing email? (Beside the obvious; they both use the Internet for transport, but what doesn't, these days?)

E-mail sometimes has links the require a browser.
Browsing sites for info sometimes requires POP e-mails to be sent.

Why have two programs when one works?

An email will only have a hyperlink if the person included one.

POP is incoming mail - POP never sends email

    Did you mean SMTP messages?
