    Hi:

I've read on the site's articles that the dvd format says the vob files are < 1GB. Is there a reason for this or is it just done by convention?

Also, I have a vob file that is approximately 3.5 GB. I tried one burn and the dvd would not play. So, do I have to split the vob into 4? If this is so, is there software that might do this for me?

I also tried using nero's (oem suite) "burn dvd video files" but it complained about some 2 GB limit and wouldn't let me proceed. The error was:
    ---
The file is larger than 2 GB and therefore cannot be stored in an iso file system. Please use the UDF file system to write such large files. This can be done by selecting another compilation type.
    ---
I havn't seen an option in nero for UDF, so I'm a bit confused. Any advice?

    Thanks!

AFAIK, VOBs have a size limitation of 1GB to be complaint DVD files. For Nero, I see DVD-ROM (UDF) just down from DVD-Video in my version.

EDIT: I've seen reference to using SmartRipper to split VOB files, but never tried it.

  4. If you can't find something to split the VOB, then you might have to demux it into it's original parts with VobEdit, and re-author

To be DVD-compliant, VOB files must be < 1GB - see What is DVD ? (top left) for more info on the DVD spec.

https://www.videohelp.com/guides.php?guideid=723#723 might help. It is entitled "Split a large vob file into 1 GB chunks and author to DVD". Might be worth checking out. You never know what you'll find if you look in the guides section
    If in doubt, Google it.

You can also open the file with DVDshrink and burn it from there. DVDshrink will make it compliant.

The reason VOB's are limited to 1GB is so that DVD players can be made more cheaply.
