i want to make a high quality dvd
    one solution software
In my opinion, these two statements are mutually exclusive. This is further borne out by the fact that the source is downloaded avi and mpg files. If you want to make high quality DVDs, then for my money, you should

    1. Read up on DVDs. What they are, how they are structured, what the terminology means.
    2. Understand video, filters, encoding etc.
    3. Get the best software for each stage, and understand how to get the best from it
    4. Concentrate on each stage in order (design, asset preparation, encoding, authoring)
    5. Keep reading, here and elsewhere. I've been doing this for quite a while now, but I am always learning new tricks and techniques.

I have DivxtoDVD in my arsenal. It is great for a fast avi to DVD encode. It produces pretty good results most of the time. It does not produce high quality DVDs, even with relatively good quality source. I can produce much higher quality from the same source by using the appropriate software at each stage of the process. But it takes at least four times as long.

If you truely want the best solutions, as you have stated in your post, then I believe that one-click-wonders are not the way to go..

My standard kit for AVI -> DVD conversion

Fast - VSO DivxtoDVD. The quality is as good as what goes in, you get 2 channel AC3 audio and 5 minute chapter stops. You don't menus, but if I wan't fast results, menus usually aren't on the list anyway.

Quality - bearing in mind the old addage "garbage in, garbage out"

Virtualdubmod to seperate the audio to uncompressed wav. VBR MP3 is common, and a pain in the arse to most encoders. If the audio is already AC3, then it is stored that way for future use.

Frameserve the video from either virtualdubmod or avisynth, depending on the filters it needs. Avisynth frameserves substantially faster than virtualdub.

CCE to encode. If it is NTSC I encode at 23.976 and add pulldown later. Always out elementary streams.

SoundForge and the Sony AC3 plugin convert the uncompressed audio to 2 channel AC3.

DVD Lab Pro to author. It can add pulldown, or you can use DGpulldown. Depending on the requirements of the menu, either Photoshop, After Effects or Vegas are used to create the required assets.

There are alternatives to each of these. Which suits you best come down to your style of work, and how much effort you are prepared to put in to learn them.
