As you probly already heard, I got new computer yesterday. But I have a few question about getting the networking set up and getting old stuff from my old computer here.

I have an ADSL service from BellSouth now, so when I bought the computer I bought a router so I can have more than one computer share the modem and when I got it home it had a probelm. Someone else took care of that, they called Linksys and it was an IP address problem. His computer an my old computer can communicate on the network but I plug in my new computer it dosen't work. I put in a name for my machine, and the workgroup name matches the workgroup of the other 2 computers. I can access the ADSL but I can't see the other computers. They can't see me either.

Another question? How can I move stuff (Contacts and calendar stuff) from the old computer to my new one? I would like to be able to do that to keep from losing stuff.

Thanks for the help. Anytime I get some kindof new thing, I need help. Now I hve 3, I really need help.

    Hi,

You can just as easily burn the stuff to a cdr or a dvdr and transfer it that way (as long as its not too much data).

As far as the network sorry can't help you there. I have my laptop hooked up wirelessly but I don't have a real network established so I don't have that experience.

EDIT - Go to your favorites folder and most of your user data should be in there somewher - or in my documents folder.
Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?

  3. In XP, use the files and settings transfer wizard.
    Have you installed file sharing?
Have you specified what folders to share?
Have you specified what users can access it, with/without password?

Maybe for today that is OK, but I must be able to print to the network printer. I'll figure it eventually.

Will it pull in stuff from Windows 98SE? Can I choose what it takes? I don't want everything.

I don't think so. I'll check it. Exactly how is it done?

    Thanks.

Have you mapped network drives? You should have no problem accessing Windows 98 files. Windows XP can use either NTFS or Fat32 file systems.

  6. I was assuming xp to xp...not sure about 98.
On the sharing tab, it gives you the options, full share, or share with password or whatever.
The simplest way, is to install NETBEUI on all machines.

If you have firewall setup, setting up network might not work.
Check you windows firewall and whatever you installed manually.
