I am thinking about getting a stand alone recorder for my Directv Tivo box. I have lots of programs saved on my tivo and am wanting to put them on DVD. I was just wondering if you can edit out the comericals on a stand alone unit? Does it need a hard drive to be able to do this? Also what is a pretty good recorder for under 200 bucks that will recorde + and - dvd's?
Thanks for any light you may have to shine on the subject for me!!

With your budget you won't get a DVD recorder with a hard drive. Therefore, you can edit commercials by either pressing the pause key whenever commercials appear in the program or you can record to VR mode RW or RAM discs and edit out the commercials after recording. Those discs basically are not playable on most DVD players.
Another option for editing commercials is to place the DVD in your computer and use an editing application before burning a new copy. -
Thanks Frobozz for your quick reply. If I uped my budget and got one with a hard drive would I be able to cut out comericals before copying them onto dvd's? With out having to hit the pause button on comericals.
Thanks again! -
Yes. At least on Pioneer and Panasonic...
Pinnacle Studio 8 and DV home video editing (ver.9 already home) -
If I decide to get a recorder without a hard drive. Could I use a +/-RW disk to transfer it to my computer and use DVD Shrink to edit out comericals? Does DVD Shrink allow you to take out comericals? Never tried using it for that.
Thanks again!
