  1. Hi Jimmalenko.. got another problem for you regarding a different file.

(Regarding yesterday's problem with no sound, i had split the files using TMPGenc but the sound was then out of sync. in the end i used winavi to make 2 files of suitable size to make VCDs. this was a film i just wanted to watch once, so wasn't bothered about fitting it onto one cd. besides i'd already done this by the time you answered, so figured i'd leave it and use your guide on another video i have, which i do want to fit on one VCD)

So.... I've got a movie file of size 717,108kb and am trying to get it onto a 74min CD. when i tried to burn it as a VCD in nero, it comes in at over 900Mb and hence won't fit on.

assuming this might be due to it's file type (AVI) i decided to convert it into mpeg.

    i used your guide
    http://members.dodo.net.au/~jimmalenko/TMPGEnc1CD.htm

followed it word for word and it worked exactly as it said it would - the file came out at exactly the size i'd specified it to - about 690Mb. (I had stripped the wav file off using audiodub and then used TMPGenc as per the guide).

however, when i then go to burn the resulting mpeg in nero as a VCD i get the same problem - it says the file goes over 900kb and is too big for the disc.

can you explain what i should do? your guide suggests that a mpeg of just under 700Mb will make a 700Mb VCD, but Nero is saying otherwise.

is the answer to simply make the mpeg smaller still (I guess to about 500mb) so that, once you put it into nero, it fits onto a 700mb disc?

NOTE - this may be relevant, although i don't think so... when putting it into virtualdub to get the wav, it said the file had an improper VBR audio encoding and wanted to rewrite the audio header etc etc.

appreciate any advice - i really don't want to a) have to have a very lo res VCD or b) cut it in half and have two VCDs

The key is to untick the tickbox that says something like "Make standard compliant VCD" in Nero

    EDIT:

... and you might want to try using an 80 min 700MB CD too ...
    If in doubt, Google it.

Again, it's time for the good ole "Nero s*cks" yell. Once you have your VCD specs mpg, use VCDEasy (last free version is perfect!) to author as VCD. Nero has a mind of its own when it comes to determining if your source material is compliant or not, and often/randomly reencodes perfectly fine source material. This is probably what happens if Nero says a 690 MB VCD mpeg1 will be >900 MB.
It will do you no good making a 500 MB source, as Nero will just reencode to the same specs, landing at 900 MB no matter what.

  4. wow - quick response.. thanks... only can you tel me where this tick box is? can't see it in nero express or straight nero...

    thanks mate - appreciate it

EDIT - Mats, I'll go get VCDEasy! In the meantime if anyone can point me to this tickbox in Nero, I'd be interested to see if it works. Ta

  6. YOU RULE.

    *doffs cap*

this really is the coolest, most helpful, altruistic site going. if it's any consolation, I'm passing it all onto a mate of mine who's about 6 months behind me in Pc / video / DVD land.

My guess is that your movie is about 90 minutes. This is why Nero is encoding it to a big file. Yes, what they say about Nero is true that it complains sometimes about stuff it shouldn't, but at VCD bit rates, you are going to get around 900 MB for a 90 minute film. To get your film to fit on a 74 minute CD-R (BAD idea, in my opinion), you are using a very low bit rate, probably about 900 Mbps (VCD uses 1150 Mpbs). You will sacrifice quality to do this. You could alternatively search on the web for a source for 90 minute CD-Rs and try to burn your film to that. 90 minute CD-Rs violate CD standards, but almost everything will read them and most burners will burn them if you burn very slowly (4x speed or less is strongly recommended). However, if you are pleased with burning a low bit rate file to 74 minute CD-Rs, that's OK, I'm suggesting an alternative you haven't considered.
