If you don't have cookies enabled it times out after a few minutes. Enable cookies and log in once, make sure you check the "log me in automatically" box. That should fix it. It's not an error if it's logging you out but a security feature.

Write your post in notepad and use cut and paste.

OK, I have cooled done some, now. Not shouting any more.

I have cookies enabled. I re-set IE6 Internet security from Medium High to Medium. Hope that does it.

It gets very agrivating to sit for 20 minutes composing a "masterpiece" knowing you a logged-in, only to find a screen asking you to log in again. And all the text is gone. I have never used a board that doesn't preserve your text if you have timed out. That information isn't retained in a cookie.

This is the second time this has happened to me on this board. I am having difficulty trusting it. I may have to compose in Notepad so I never lose text again.

You don't have to lower the settings, matter of fact I would reccommend you turn them back to where they were. After you have done so look down in the lower right corner of your browser and you should see what looks like a "do not enter" sign if a cookie was blocked. Bouble click the icon which will bring up cookie settings for this particular site. You can allow cookies on a site by site basis.

Or just copy the text from the text box before posting, not sure about time outs but usually if there's a posting error hitting the back button will bring up the page with the text intact.

Edit: BTW I'm not positive but I think it will post after you log in.

Thanks for the advice. Your patience is also appreciated.

I re-set my security to Medium High in IE6. I have not yet noticed the cookie- blocked icon, but will continue to pay attention.

I now copy my posting to Notepad just before Submit -- just in case. And I have never yet been able to go back or otherwise retrieve my text after a time-out. Sooooo, the old dog continues to learn new tricks

  10. The forum "logging me off automatically" hasn't happened to me as far as I can remember. Once or twice, I did loose the connection but that was because my ISP connection dropped off.

For any long post, I always use MS-Word. This way I can compose properly, do a spell check, etc. before I post.

There's a spellchecker for forms in IE, http://www.iespell.com/

Better yet the newest google toolbar now has a spellchecker and I like it better than Iespell.

Because I often take a long time to compose a post (esp. at work), I ALWAYS copy my text (select, CTRL+C) just before hitting SUBMIT. Then, I re-logon, paste (CTRL+V) and submit. Once I learned to do this, I've only missed 2 posts (both when I forgot to do it). Takes no time and is almost foolproof, plus it leaves your IE settings alone.

What about simply hitting the Back button if it asks you to login again ?

Then you can copy and paste the text
    If in doubt, Google it.

Doesn't always work, especially if you have multiple browser windows open.

If you hit submit and it asks you to login, then you hit Back in that same window, voila, information is still there. I do it all the time. Always works for me
    If in doubt, Google it.
