I want to convert a Video_TS folder into an .avi Xvid file with mencoder. I used the video-bitrate the calculator told me and put the following options on: crop, high quality, two-pass encoding, trellis quantization, quarter pixel ME, billinear
thats all right with every video_TS folder, except two. they just turn out with the final filesize about 120 MB too big. so i lowered the bitrate, but the filesize was still 120 MB too big. whats the problem here?
i hope somebody can help me

  2. Send me to major4@mac.com the process outputs, maybe the could contain hints about which is the difference between those encodings.

  3. Major, I'm getting a similar problem. I'm encoding to .AVI using Xvid (mencoder) with crop, high quality, b-frames, 2-pass, trellis, qpel, bicubic spline The video track being converted is Track 16. The audio track is being converted from 5.1 -> stereo MP3 (48000Hz, 128 kbps, gain +9). Regardless of what value I put in for the bitrate, the final AVI is the same size at 1.21 GB - way too large to put on a CD.

Here's my terminal output using a 933 kbit/sec video setting

As you can see, even though the specified bitrates are extremely different, the final video streams end up the same size. Any insights as to what's going on?

  4. This problem has apparently been around for a while...

    https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=259502

  5. I have the same problem with mencoder DivX. I choose to convert a VIDEO_TS folder to AVI DivX with the following options: 140 min on 1 80m mode-1 700 MB CD-R (using the auto button for the bitrate and screen size), 128 kbit/s audio bitrate (sampling: 44100 Hz) VBR, autocrop, high quality, 4 motion vectors, 2-pass encoding, trellis quantization, quarter pixel ME, billinear (SSE), qmin=3, qmax=9.

The resulting AVI file size is still too large to fit on a 700 MB CD. It's actually almost 800 MB.

I'm a bit confused. Isn't two-pass encoding supposed to alter the bitrate after the first pass so the file doesn't end up being smaller/bigger than the intended file size?

(I'm asking this, because before I switched to Macs, I used to convert VIDEO_TS folders with GordianKnot, which did the trick ...)
