  1. I recently made a VCD using Pinnacle Studio 8. Unfortunately the content on the camcorder and on the computor harddrive has been erased. I have been told convert the VCD(.dat) file into mpeg 1 and 2 and AV1DV Type 2 file. either can then be imported back into studio 8.
I therefore need to know how to convert and reuse the content in Studio? :

    Download VCDGear from the link.

Open VCDGear, from the Extraction/Conversion shown below in red, select dat > mpeg:

Then hit the load tab as shown in blue, open the dat file from your VCD.

    Hit Start

BTW, VCD video is DVD compliant. You only need to convert the audio from 44khz to 48khz. Converting the video to something else for authoring can and will result in loss of quality. Only convert the audio to maintain the best quality. If Studio 8 won't author the video as is do it in another editor.

  7. The problem is that .dat isn't the same than .mpg. You have to convert it, because many software don't support .dat stream.

    Download VCDGear from the link.

Open VCDGear, from the Extraction/Conversion shown below in red, select dat > mpeg:

Then hit the load tab as shown in blue, open the dat file from your VCD.

    Hit Start
When I put the vcd in the cd-rom drive the files appear as follows:- EXT, MPEGAV, SEGMENT, and VCD. double clicking on MPEGAV reveals AVSEQ01 I right clicked on this and the list that appeared said open with notepad or choose program, I chose windows media player, the list now includes play now and I can view the contents on the computor.
Have downloaded vcdgear , selected dat-> mpeg, clicked load, put the vcd in D drive and clicked start. The following appeared:-
    VCD Gear v3.56 build050213 beta
'Source file could not be opened or accessed'
    ''Am I doing something wrong''

I opened up vcdgear, I put the vcd in the cd rom drive which opened automatically to the 4 files previously mentioned, double clicking MPEGAV revealed AVSEQ01 I then returned to vcdgear on the status bar and clicked load. This revealed 'My Documents which listed vcdgear and asked for a file name to be inserted' I did not know how to treat this request so closed it and clicked start which brought up the message mentioned previously.

You need to select the AVESQ01 file as I mentioned previously when you click on the load icon.

From the load icon, locate your vcd folder (under your cd/dvd drive) and the AVESQ01 file manually.

Better still, when you hit the load icon, just type in the following:

    D:\MPEGAV\AVESQ01

(where D is the letter of your drive)

I eventually got :- D:\MPAGAV\AVSEQ01.DAT next to the load button and clicked start.
    The following appeared under vcdgear
'There may not be enough space to write the output file. Continue
    Yes No Cancel
I clicked yes the following appeared under AVSEQ01.mpg
    'Unable to create output file'

Sounds like you're almost out of hard disk space.

Try freeing up some of the space on your hard drive.

Excellant!!! my c. drive was rather full although still had about 10gb on it, however tried saving to local disc F which had plenty of space which I use for my camcorder movies, and it worked. I now have the contents back on the computor but need to import it to studio 8 to include in a movie. any ideas?
