  1. Hello all, I want to write my divx movie with its subtitle on dvd. Because i want to watch it on the tv by divx-dvd player. But i don't know how can i apply the subtitle to divx movie while burning the dvd. Is it enough to write the subtitle on the dvd with divx movie like normal burning of ordinary files?

good luck. takes about 5 minutes to have your avi and subs together with no need to reencode the avi.

So this is a .divx movie with xsubs? Or ricardouk is right and you actually meant avi?

A lot of players support avi's with external subs. For best results probably srt is the best format. In such a case. No need to do anything, just burn.

    Hi everyone

like Celtic Druid said if your dvd/divx player supports srt just burn your avi and srt(avi and srt mus have same name)

if it doesnt, some players have difficulty in displaying them correctly, missing letters, wrong position onscreen(very important thing for sum1 that uses subs) , use the other method

but i would try Celtic Druid solution first.

Celtic Druid you have been a member here longer than me, can you answer me something?

when one refers to avi compressed(divx) what abreviation should we use when posting here for avoiding problems, avi or divx?

    thanks

Since DivX networks now have their own divx container (now more than just avi renamed) I would assume that if someone says a divx file they mean a divx file.

I would say a DivX avi file, Divx/avi or you could be more specific and say DivX 5.x avi to make a distinction from a DivX3 avi as DivX 5.x is MPEG4 and DivX 3 is not.

Really this whole avi mess should never have been allowed to happen. Bring on the mp4 container, where the codec used doesn't really matter.

  7. Thanks ricardo and celtic,i will try. So I'm just going to burn two files by simply adding them with nero burner. These are .avi (divx ) and its subtitle(.srt is ok i guess) that should have exactly the same name with the film.

  9. Hmm, I don't have divx standalone.
I know that this naming of the movie and subtitle files works in software players when you have DVobSub instaled allowing the filter to load and display automatically the subtitles. Is this the situation in divx standalone players? Is the subtitles also automatically displayed or you should point the player to it? If it is the second this naming has no sense. Maybe only if you have several movies on one disc simply to know which subtitle to which movie belongs.

Not all players support external subs. But yeah, if they are named the same then they will be autodetected. You can also have multiple subs by using movie.eng.srt, movie.fr.srt, etc. or movie.01.srt, movie.02.srt.

VOBSub support is another thing that varies depending on the player.

to clarify, a media player like MPC won't play the subtitles, unless the file that you want to use is named exactly the same as the main movie except for the extension, is this correct?

I ask because I've ripped a DVD and encoded the main movie to XviD/MP3 VBR. I ripped the VOB to a single file with DVD Decrypter and encoded it with StaxRip. StaxRip used VobSub Ripper Wizard to extract the SUB/IDX, but to save space I used SubRip to convert the bitmaps to SRT (I'm not even sure if media player classic, which is what I generally use, will play SUB/IDX, but I know it does play SRTs). Basically, I'm wondering, if every time I want to play the movie with a subtitle set in a given language, will I have to rename the file to the same name as the movie?

Even when I open the SRT in notepad, I can see how simple the SRT protocol is. It simply lists the number of the subtitle images to be displayed chronologically, the timestamp, and the actual text. But I don't see anywhere where it could distinguish separate streams for different languages, so I think it is not possible, and appending the different SRTs would not work. Or would it work with some media players? It seems a bit of an oversight that whenever the SRT protocol was created, that an identifier for different languages/streams would not be made, and that it would've been relatively easy to add this feature.

Am I just out of luck and have to rename the file(s) to play subs with the movie in a different language, or look into using some other type of protocol if I want the different streams in one file? Thanks for any help you can give me on the subject

If you name the subtitle files like above you can switch between the subs if you use vsfilter / directvobsub. Then in MPC just choose Play->Filters->Directvobsub->Choose eng, fr, etc.
