In what format are your subs? In what format is you "video files"?
For VCD I use(d) the subtitler filter in VirtualDub, frameserve to encoder TMPGEnc).
What are you trying to do? You mention "back this up on a DVD" but also "backing this up as a VCD". For VCD, the subs has to be encoded into the video itself, while for DVD, the subs are switchable as a separate stream.

the video file is in avi format. how do i find the format of the subtitles? if im not mistaken, its DVobSub. i meant to say that i backed it up on cd as a vcd in nero. if u can tell me, what the best way to do what im trying to do. i want the subtitles included in the video once i back it up. TY ahead.

For DVD, the "best" or "real" way is to create selectable subs. What's the extension of your subs?
.srt?
.sub + a .idx? (That's VobSub)
.ssa?

I know that its SSA but could you show me how to find the extension. Im new to this video editing and stuff. TY

File extensions are not specific to video editing. In folder options disable the hiding of known file extensions and you will be able to see the file extension. Although I wouldn't have thought that ssa would be associated with anything and therefor be visable anyway.

maybe this will help because no extension popped up when i de-selected that option. it is a Japanese Audio Track as well as an internal subtitlestream. DirectVobSub is nessasry for displaying the subtitles. is the fact that its internal mean there is no extension? if so can i stll back this up and see the subtitles? if so how? TY

Well of course if the file has internal subs, then there is no external sub file to have an extension.
What is the extension of the video file? mkv? ogm? mp4? avi?
Shouldn't be a problem to demux the subs, then re-add them when your author your DVD.
If you just want to burn it as a backup, then really the file should be bit identical once burnt. Therefor if it has subs before burning it should have them once burnt. -
its an avi file. let me rephrase that. i want to back it up as a vcd or dvd (which ever) so i can make a menu and create chapters. i tried to back it up as a vcd and the subtitles didnt display. hope this help. TY. anything i can try.
