what is a simple program that just puts some text over a avi video. i want to put my website url up in the corner very slow for not very long. maybe have a fade in/fade out effect. can tmpgenc do it? if not , what program can. and i'd like to not have to be able to re-encode it, but i probably will. anyway, any help would be appreciated

Yes, you have to reencode it. However if it is an avi, and you were looking to use tmpgenc you would have reencoded anyway as tmpgenc only outputs mpeg files. There is a logo filter for virtualdub that lets you overlay a grapgic on your video - like a watermark. If you then frameserve this to tmpgenc then at least you only have one encode (to mpeg) to do. This assumes you are heading to DVD.
On DVD you have another option - forced subtitles. No actual change to the video, but no fades etc either.Read my blog here.

sorry, tmpgenc xpress. that lets you encode as avi and i used the divx pro codec. there's no way to do it with that?

don't know if tmpgenc express can read a vdr (virtualdub frameserved file) - give it a try

AVI to AVI, why not use VirtualDub only? The Logo filter is pretty powerful, and Jimmalenko has even written a guide for it.
But yes, reencoding (=losing quality) is necessary.
