Be sure you have a separate VCR and DVD recorder. No combo units.
The forum is full of threads just like this one. Do some searching and reading.
JVC, Pioneer and LiteOn/ILO tend to give the highest quality available.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Stay far away from the combo units...When one part goes out the other part is next.

If Macrvision, or other copy protcetion is an issue, you should get the LiteOn /ILO and use the latest firmware with hack at site www.ss3f.com/ilo.
I have an ILO DVDRHD04, so configured, and it works excellent for VHS to DVD and all other recording. I would recomend it period. The problem is the ILO 04 series is a Wal Mart item and is discontinued. The LiteON is being sold at about $25 or less than the ILO. I also use a Go Video combo player [ $80 costco} unit to play ito the ILO and it works very well. -
Thanks if i get the DVDRHD04 how hard is it to reflash it or reprogram it?
I assume when i do this then it will copy macrovision protected tapes? -
posted today at ableshoppers. I might get one of these myself.
Ilo DVDR05 DVD+R/RW DVD Recorder $104
Walmart.com has the ilo DVDR05 DVD+R/RW DVD Recorder for $99 + $5 shipping = $104 shipped. Features TV Tuner, IEEE 1394 FireWire, front and rear A/V Inputs. -

Very easy for the upgrade and/or hack. Look at Guitarmans post's and his site www.ss3f.com/ilo for instructions. As i stated you may not find a ILO at Wal Mart. If you do find one they will probably want $279 plus tax. The LiteOne is now not much more and has a bigger hard drive, The units without HDD are cheaper. Check the above site
I have had 1 tape out of about 150 that had some problems on the very top of the tape. If you copy protected DVD disk's to the HDD you will need another DVD player and record in real time.

The ILO 05 series is a Cyberhome and at least at this point there is no hack availble. If VHS to DVD and Macrovision is not an issue, I would give it a try. You can always return it to Wal Mart if you don't like it. Try to get it at a store its easier to return, The web site will still charge tax. I have a Cyberhome 300 DVD player $36.00 it's been fine for almost a year. -

VERY happy with my ILO dvdr04. Worst case is a small amount of jitter when the unit records a bad spot from the VHS tape. I stopped using a capture card because this is SO much easier.

You are so RIGHT
I have an ILO DVDRHD04 and it is one OK unit The PC, and capture card bit is for the birds. and I have never been satisfied with anything that claims to overcome Macrovision. A pc might be used for special purposes but so far I've not gone back. This ILO with the hack eliminates MV period. Below is a Quote I posted on another forum on this site.
By the way, I have [Guitarman] and his comments to thank for having the ILO

The comment Below is from a system review.
Trying to archive and transfer analog video to digital mediums can be one of the most frustrating processes for A/V enthusiasts. If using a computer, you will need a dedicated capture device, various software applications, and a multitude of compression codecs. If that is not bad enough, you will get to tweak audio-to-video synchronization rates, sound levels, de-interlacing options, compression bitrates, and a near endless list of other settings. The process becomes even more convoluted when transferring video to disc. Did you save in the correct compression format, frames per second rate, and pixel resolution? -

I would say the LityeOn 5045. The HDD is larger [160gb] Some features are different and some say the are the same unit. You might ask [Guitarman] for his opinion. I don't blieve you indicated if Macrovision and a hack is an issue, If not, I think he would reccomend a Pioneer. The hack for the LiteOn is at the same site. The Pioneer is more expensive than the LiteOn. Check New Egg. -
I've transferred a number of VHS moives to DVD with the ILO dvdr04 and the software hack and it works fine. I also use it as my main stand-alone player and it's great. Now that they've gotten cheaper at WalMart, they're an even better buy....

Agreed !!! The ILO 04 is a great recorder
The problem is ILO is a Wal Mart brand. The ILO 04 series is made by LiteOn and they can be hacked. They are being phased out. The New 05 series is made by Cyberhome and no hack is available. One should not get the 05 thinking it is a LiteON product.
