Something I'd really like to see is a new standard for VCDs/SVCDs that supports MP3 audio instead of the older mp2 audio that is currently part of the standard. This would save more space for the video, so we could get either more quality or a greater length of video.
Would these be playable with current software media players? ..or would they get confused?
Any thoughts...?

suuposedly Xing MPEG player will play mpeg files with layer 3 sound, i dont know of any others that will. possibly a Divx player would, as it woul dbe expecting layer3 audio, and would be using video for windows, for the video. try it.

Most software players probably wouldn't care and play it just fine.
However, these discs will not play on most stand-alone players.
It is very unlikely (as in it will never happen) that S/VCD will officially support layer 3 audio.
BTW, you will not get better (perceptable) quality with layer 3 audio compared to MPEG-1 Layer2 at 224 kbit/s.
Regards.
