I live in New Zealand, using PAL.

I am having trouble getting home-created DVD-R/DVD-RW discs to play on my old DVD player.

I am using reasonably good media. When I create a DVD from captured video on the PC ASUS DVD burner using Nero, or on a Panasonic DMR-EH50 recorder, the DVDs will not play on the Magnavox (local Australian chain store brand) player. The start menu comes up, but when the first chapter is selected the player stutters, and freezes. The same DVD plays ok on the recorder, and on neighbours DVD players.

When I backup a DVD movie onto this media (purely for test purposes) using my PC , they play fine on my Magnavox DVD player.

I realise the easiest solution is to trash the old player and find a better one, but I was hoping somebody might have a quick fix for this sort of compatibility problem please?

It sounds like a compatability issue with the format of the media. Try using +R media, or +R media bitset to look like DVD-ROM.

    Thanks for the tip Guns1inger.

Unfortunately I also wish to use this machine for recording TV programmes to disc, to watch on the second DVD player. Although the recorder will handle +R, it will not record to +RW.

I really do not wish to permanently burn my wifes soap operas to disc

I would give it a try, just to confirm if this is the cause. At least then you will know if you need a new play, or a new shelf for the soaps
