Guys, I've owned a computer for 6 years and I have yet to learn how to type. It probably would be wise for me to learn how since computer will be a piece of equipment that I would be required to repair after I graduate (Electronic Tech).

Do you guys know of a good app that I can use to learn how to type?

Also, I'm pressed for time everyday and was wondering if you guys feel that 30min a day is adequate enough for someone who needs to learn how to type within a year?

Mavis Beacan Teaches typing.(spelling is likely wrong)

    OR!

Learn the home keys, learn which fingers hit which keys (easy to figure out when you learn the home keys) and just FORCE youself to use it. You'll have to look down alot at first but its muscle memory. Eventually your fingers learn and your off.

I took a typing class and almost failed, the next year I got my first PC and just knowing the basic allowed me to hit really high WPM when on the internet.

Looks to me like you already know how to type. You posted this question, didn't you ?
    If in doubt, Google it.

How about Microsoft word or notepad?

Typing is nothing more than memory and feel, and just requires practice.

Besides...shame on you for not taking typing in high school (keyboarding)...all the hot girls took typing at my HS...and if they were taking it, Northcat took it too

although I always needed one of them to "help" me

Is it just me, or is the pain that you get in your forearms while typing natural?

Will it ever stop? It gets pretty painful annd causes me to make errors

The pain in your forearms is not natural and will lead to tendinitis of the wrists if you keep typing that way. The reason it's happening is because your keyboard is too high up off the floor. That's why computer desks have a rollout piece for the keyboard under the main desk.

Your wrists should be an equal distance off the floor as your elbows. If your forearms are parallel to the floor and not on an angle, then they won't hurt.

soreness is typical for post whoring newbies...

and don't listen to SM...she's full of $hit....the pain in your forearm is caused from a lack of use. You are apparently single. If you were married your forearms would be in perfect shape just like they were when you were 15 and found your dad's porn stash

  11. The key to learning how to type is using the correct fingers on the correct keys.
You must use all 10 fingers. If you stick to the 3-finger-on-each-hand method, you will never improve because you'll always have to look at the keyboard.

Don't worry about looking at the keyboard at first; it's okay to look.

When I was learning, I literally wrote the letters on my fingers so I would know which ones to use. My left pinky said "Q A Z" and so forth.

It is slow at first, but one day you'll just wake up and you won't be looking at the keyboard. You'll probably surprise yourself.
    Good luck.

actually I'm just goofing off, my wife is still very cooperative with my favorite "sport" even after 17 years

Mavis Beacon is a very good typing program. It'll get you learning to type and play typing game to help you get use to it.

I learned how to type and it really helped with the computer stuff. Now I just need to perfect the English...
