Your AVI file; Do you mean you want to fit on 2 DVDs? Anyway, VirtualDub works as well as any for cutting AVIs. Just cut on a key frame and save the two parts.

For MPEGs, there are a few utilities for repair in the 'Tools' section to the left. For MPEG editing, you can use Cuttermaran for free. I haven't used it, so I'm not sure how well it works in repairing.

For one DVD, that would give you a bitrate of ~1929Kbs. A little low for full resolution DVD. You could try 1/2 D1, 352 X 480, or similar to VCD resolution. Not the best quality, but that depends on how good your source video is. I got that from a bitrate calculator in 'Tools' to the left. <<<. No need to cut the AVI, unless you have FAT 32 and you can't get a 4GB+ file on your HD.

EDIT: You know you might want to try VSO DivxToDVD. It will do the hard part of the conversion to DVD. If you don't like the results, then the 'hard way' is what you need to learn.

Depends what encoding program you are using along with what settings. With TMPGEnc you can just use the DVD template NTSC (Low Resolution) from the wizard and it will figure it out for you. But the setting shouldn't change if you select it.

BTW, that bitrate can vary, but with the length of your AVI, it should be below 2000. You might want to encode a 5 minute section to see how it will come out. Low bitrates tend to have low quality, that why I suggested 1/2 D1. For more information, you will need to read the guides. <<<

Or try the VSO DivxToDVD program if you don't need as much control.
