I don't think it is the same company ..

I doubt it. Some other genius will rise to the challenge, as always. And P2P is alive and rocking! Check out the scene on BT and eMule

  4. After reading THIS post it sounds like Sony(?) bought Lightning UK off(possible employee now)...sort of like what happened to DVDShrink by Nero.

Exactly how is THIS post used to come to the conclusions that you did about LightningUK? It's merely a copy and paste of the message from LightningUK on cdfreaks.com. Jumping to a lot of conclusions there about a guy who's done a lot for the DVD backup community.

I guess that this will just force the decrypting software jockies to go underground. I doubt that it will kill the releases of similar software, just force the writers to remain anonymous, instead of having a web site dedicated to the tool. Of course, forums will spring up in countries where the "fair use" doctrine still rules, so that a free exchange of ideas will continue, and new "protection schemes" will be discussed and cracked.

The hardest thing to suppress is an idea.

  10. Wait, what happened with DVDshrink? Someone mentioned it earlier concerning Sony. I noticed that their site has been redirected. Did those asses at Sony shut down the best ripping tool ever? God I hate them. Maybe I use it because of all the annoying ads and commercials those weenies play on the DVDs I legally bought.

  14. The DVD Decrypter author has announced that he has been served with an order to cease his development of DVD Decrypter. The developer has been forced to hand over all source code and the domain that he was using. It is thought that it could be Sony who have served this notice, as it is rumoured that he broke their new copyright protection within 72 hours of its release.

    1. dissable the automatic update feature on DVDD or the company might find your ass through the IP address. Which will suck trust me.

    2. What will the next program look like and were is it possible to get information on it?

I assume it will take some time before a new encryption is developed and then even longer before disks appear with it. Even after that there will be many companies that will stick to the old and cheap methods that can be cracked by the current version of decrypter. I don't get many new releases, but I have yet, to find a disk that even smart rippper (why hasn't this ben mentioned?) can't handle. So I suspect it will quite some time before this is a problem. And for some of us, it may never be a problem. Or am I missing something here?
If it is Sony, I wonder if their hardware and Disk division are pissed because their sales will drop off if people have no reason to buy blank DVDs and burners?

sony's divisions have for some time been at odds with each other and in many cases , do not even have a clue what is happening at a different division ...

  18. It is indeed a sad day for all us Video Users. To watch a "big" company shut down one of the best pieces of software availiable.
I join my voice with millions of users of DVDD that regrets this loss, and thank Lightning_UK for his work these years.
I know as a fact that others will come, maybe not so good, maybe better, but DVD Decrypter was a landmark to our time, I think almost everybody here uses it.
As for me, thank God I live in Ecuador, where I can still use it freely without having to worry.

Don't be so sure. The movie "Closer" -- from Sony/Columbia, obviously! -- which uses the ARCCOS protection system, came out with a tougher version of it in the R2 release which came out the other day, Friday, 3rd June.

The current (last) version of DVD Decrypter wouldn't break it, so that doesn't help anyone, does it? However, it seems that Slysoft and Any DVD have released an updated version that does bypass/crack it already.

Who knows, what's going to happen with this storyline now?..........

Dont you find it funny that companies like Sony say do not copy dvds (regardless of whether you own it) and yet, at the same time provide the tools needed to do so (dvd burner and blank media).

Yup, I have to agree with you on that one. Who knows what will happen next!!!! I wouldn't be surprised if the next program they shut down is DVD SHRINK!

  23. Yeah I agree. I think the companies should start selling 2 copies of each DVD in one box. So thatno body takes a backup. Use one and lockup other as a backup for later use !!!

  27. If the developers of Shrink, AnyDVD, and the others are smart, they are already changing the way they are going about developing and releasing their software... such as publicly releasing source code, anonomously posting software updates on the web, making the decrypting part of their software a separate plugin, etc.

RIP DVD Decrypter. I love you, man! Sniff.

Thanks Lightning_UK for all you've done.
