I'm using sound forge my PC's hooked up to my surround sound reciver.
The effect I want to try is that sweep sound front to back, left rear right rear. I am also playing with a guide on doom 9 forum.

Follow that guide, using Sound Forge for the Audition steps. You may have to play around a little bit to get similar results.
Personally, this looks like a hell of a lot of effort (especially if you are doing a whole movie) to create something that a Pro-Logic II surround system will do a whole lot better from the original source. I don't believe the effort is worth the outcome.Read my blog here.
