  1. Hello all..

I've encoded many files very successfully using ffmpegx, always using the default settings plus 'Trellis' when encoding avi/divx files up to dvd.

On certain files there is 'blocking' in dark areas or areas of subtle shading (such as walls/floors etc). In the options tab, what difference would the options 'B-Frames/4 motion vectors/QPEM make to the resulting file?

Also would it be sensible to put the QMin/Max settings at 2-10 rather than 2-20 therefore limiting the compression range down? I was under the impression that these settings are needed more when converting a VOB into an AVI... so I was just wondering if anyone uses these particular setting to get every last bit of quality out of a particular AVI file.

    Thanks in advance...

    Yes, it is possible.

  3. Hi Major,

Thanks for the super speedy response!

I've read the options guide on your site earlier, and as helpful as it is, I'm still a bit unclear as to what a 'b-frame' is....etc etc

I encoded a high quality divx file to dvd twice, once with default settings and once with these boxes checked: High Quality, Use B-Frames, 4 Motion, Trellis, QPME. Also had Qmin:2 Qmax:10. The resulting file looked identical to the 'standard' file but encoded slightly faster!? I was expeting by checking all the 'higher quality' settings that it would take longer. Weird, but I'm not complaining! My post was really only to find out what the optimum settings would be to avoid blocking, and if others have had similar experiences..

    Thanks again

  4. There are no optimum settings in absolute, all depends on what is your source and what you expect from the result.
