Amazing that it never occured to them that if they didn't waste money on copy protection then their profits might be higher.

They figure their profits might be higher by enforcing copy protection, but in reality, it just drives people away to other products.
Look at their Minidisc players....not selling nearly as well as mp3 players. -
However, the company is not revealing which titles they are likely to be.
Unless they intend to prominently label which discs do not strictly comply with Red Book standards then they are all suspect and not worth anyone's hard earned $$$. -
To add insult to injury, recordable CD (and soon DVD IIRC) media has a special tax that goes to the music industry pockets, to compensate them for their potential loss. I can't make that fit with uncopyable "CD"s (well, we all know that there's no such thing, but...)

The new protection will work right up to the moment when someone:
1) Decides that an analog copy is good enough for archiving, and ...
2) Trades in the CD at a local used-CD store.
... where subsequent owners of the CD do the exact same thing. I'll bet such CDs will be immensely popular ... in libraries (grin). -
Sony, along with the rest of the RIAA, can stick their new "copy protection" scheme in the same place they can stick their "music".
I haven't bought a CD in at least five years. I don't buy, download or listen to RIAA crap. I'll be boycotting those greedy Nazis till I drop.
