  1. re:Samsung upconverting DVD
Samsungs have been reported to be pretty finicky in regards to properly matching up w/ certain TVs. On my JVC DILA, it sucked, & I returned it. The Zenith 318 I have now works a treat. You may want to consider borrowing/buying another brand for comparison, although you best course is trying the other "rebuilders" mentioned. Good luck!

Both the TV and DVD player are Samsung.

On a side note, how do you like the HD-ILA?

  3. ah so. Then yeah, the other DVD rebuilders should improve things for you.
Love the JVC - went around the world staring at all kind of TVs, but the pic quality of the JVC couldn't be beat, IMHO

  4. DVD5's are really cheap these days. Having read the entire thread, I think the best route for you (other than watching the original) is to backup over 2 discs.

  5. DVD Rebuilder produced great results.

I did a test with The Incredibles and Finding Nemo, first I reauthored with DVD Shrink with no compression, keeping only the main movie and AC3 5.1. I then re-encoded using DVD Rebuilder with a 4-pass CCE encode, and the results looked very good, no noticable pixelation or macroblocking, even with an upscale to 720p.

  6. Reauthor.
Finding Nemo movie only is actually quite small, less than 4GB which requires NO further compression and looks superb on my 65" HDTV. So, you wasted your time with DVD-RB and CCE on this one. Take a look at the file size next time. DVD-RB and CCE Basic 2.7 with 2-pass are great, when they are even needed.

May I interject my 2 cents. Would the possibility of an upconversions dvd player. Would this give an improved picture for backuped dvds as it does for the originals. Like this toshiba player designed for hd tvs.

    This could be a consideration.

    Thanx All.
