I'm very new to video codecs. And, as such, am having a diffucult time with ffmpegX. Whatever I'm doing incorrectly, I do incorrectly repeatedly. I hooked up a firewire from the back of my Moto 6200 cable box to my G4 powerbook( 10.4.1 OS ), and started recording HD streams. They play back fine, albeit not great, because the G4 doesn't handle the.ts stream as wellas a G5 would. This is where I thought your tool would be great.
Each time I encode the stream, whether it be MPEG 4 [.AVI] mencoder or XviD [.AVI] mencoder I get video, but no audio. I've fooled around with these settings in the AUDIO tab using every combination imagineable, yet no audio. I'm frustrated. I've installed all video codecs ( Divx, 3ivx,), checked the box in the OPTIONS tab for QT. I know this will work, but as I said, I must be making the same mistake over and over again.
Any help for this newbie would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  2. Does it work with "XviD ffmpeg"?

Thanks for the quick reply major.
    Unfortunately... no.

  4. Try to use MPEG Streamclip to export the audio.

    Major,
To follow up: When I use "XviD ffmpeg", I get audio, but no video.
As far as MPEG Streamclip: Do I use this in conjunction w/ ffmpeg, or as
a stand-alone app that will encode both audio and video ?

    Thanks for your help.

    JJ

  6. MPEG Streamclip should be able to read TS files quite reliably if you encounter problems with ffmpegX. You can save with it to some formats, or extract the video/audio streams with it and then convert them with ffmpegX.

I d/l'd Streamclip and I have the MPEG 2 Component, so I should be good to go with that. I'll give it a try when I have some free time and report back.
However, I was fooloing around with ffmpegx earlier and was trying differnet combos in the audio tab to get it working properly for me. One combination I used ( XviD [.AVI] (ffmpegx) for Video along with selecting "Get Audio"... ( I used the original .ts file) in the audio tab produced both the Audio and Video.
Wow, what a relief that was... finally. It played back in Mplayer and the compression was perfect. The only problem, it seems like there is always one for me, was that it wouldn't play back in QT.
Any thoughts as to why ?

  8. Perhaps you miss the latest DivX.com codecs?

    Major,
I d/l'd the Divx codecs. But, it got me to thinking that maybe there was something wrong with their comaptibilty with Tiger and QT 7.0.1. After reading thru Divx's forums, it seemed as though many people were having problems similar to mine.
I was able to finally find something that COMPLETELY solved my Audio problems with ffmpegx. Hopefully this will help others who might be experiencing the same as me. I d/l'd this ac3 component and added it to my /Library/Quicktime folder and now there is no playback problem with QT.
Here is where others may get it:

Thanks for your help, and above all your patience, with me. I will be donating the 15 bucks for your further development.

    Thanks,
    JJ

  10. Indeed, if your AVI has AC3 audio, you must install that codec as no other Quicktime codec is able to read AC3 in AVI.
