I've used a lot of programs for recording video streaming , both free and
shareware -even if almost all derived from the former free CamStudio- but
every program doesn't record anything, I mean that when I play the recorded
file, I see always a black screen (but the sound has been recorded). Can
someone help me?
Thanks.
Giovanni

Hi giorel,
Welcome to the forums.
By streaming video, I'm guessing you mean footage in something like WMV or ASF? I think that explains why apps like CamStudio aren't working.
Try something like Stoik Video Converter (I've used this and it's been effective), WM Recorder or Boilsoft ASF Converter. There may be others...
Hope that helps. There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

Thank you Daamon. Maybe I'm unable to explain myself, but I'd want only to record a piece of my screen where I'm receiving a stream, apart the format of the streaming. Only a few years ago I used CamStudio, and it made the job very well. Now, I tried to use CamStudio again, and then a lot of other similar programs (mainly shareware and mainly derived by CamStudio I suppose), but I record only a black (or blank, as you prefer) video. I don't understand why (codecs, system characteristics, new streaming formats versions, etc, ???). My system is a WinXP SP1 and I've installed many codecs. I used all them, with all the programs, for the format of the recorded file, everytime with the same results.

You could try turning "Use Overlays" setting off in Windows Media Player.
If in doubt, Google it. -
Hi Giovanni,
No problem.
If it's streaming video, try one of the ones I mentioned above - chances are it'll do the job. I only know Stoik Video Converter and that's worked for me before, and it's the only free one.
The way Stoik works is to use the stream as a source input file (you don't actually see the footage on screen) and it outputs in a format of your choice (DivX AVI etc.).
What you're trying to do (I think) is record the displayed footage using a screen capture tool something like CamStudio. Because of the way the footage is displayed, the capture tool can't see the footage and that's why you get blank or black.
Post back if you have troubles with Stoik or one of the others...
Or, try jimmalenko's suggestion to see if you can capture WMP's display of the footage.
Good luck. There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

Using Stoik, after inputing the address of the video stream and the output file (with the format), receive the message: "Video clips not defined. Please select video clips and try again".
Thanks to all anyway.

Thank you again. Stoik doesn't work yet (always "video clips not defined..."), but I think that the problem is due to the format of the stream, a RA file (is this format not recordable?).

Aha - A vital piece of evidence has been unearthed.
An RA file is, I believe, part of the Real Networks family of files. So, you need something that will take streaming RealMedia and convert that.
Look into these, they might do the job. I've not used them, but their description sounds like they fit the bill...
RM Recorder
Boilsoft RM Converter
Neither are free, but are quite cheap.
That should sort you out, good luck...There is some corner of a foreign field that is forever England: Telstra Stadium, Sydney, 22/11/2003.

Thank you, I'll try both programs. Do you think that my original problem using CamStudio and CamStudio-like programs were due to the format of the streaming? I thought that recording with those programs were independent of the formats of the stream (and I'm sure that it was so with CamStudio a few years ago).

I have to confess that I don't know for sure, but I suspect that apps like CamStudio can't capture streaming content because it's displayed in a different way to the "normal" screen display (things like MS Word etc.).
