It has been bothering me that on my Panasonic E95 finalised DVD-R discs of 16:9 recordings don't 'pop' into widescreen when loaded. I have to manually switch the TV to widescreen mode!![]()
I've seen here and on other forums that there is a way to insert a widescreen 'flag', by burning a copy using a PC DVD writer using IFOEdit or something similar.
However all the threads use language that is a bit technically advanced for a 'newbie' like me. They talk about opening VIDEO_TS folders and such-like and I'm afraid I have no-idea what these are or where to locate them.![]()
Is it possible that someone could post an Idiots Guide to inserting a 16:9 widscreen flag using IFOEdit for a COMPLETE beginner please.![]()

I don't know if there's an idiot's guide out there, but it's not as complicated as you might think. I have to set the widescreen flag on recordings made from my Lite-on recorder and it only takes a few seconds.
First of all, copy the DVD as it comes out of the recorder. Some of them do funky things with tilesets and don't appear to finalise correctly, if yours is one of them then use the latest version of DVD Decrypter. There's no CSS on a recorded disc but DVDD should be able to handle the VR mode most recorders knock out. Plus of course if you're going to edit a file, it needs to be on a writable medium which, at this point, your discs isn't.
Now it's on your hard disk, load up IFO Edit and click on Open. Select the hard disk with the contents of the DVD on it, and navigate to the relevant directory. In that directory you should have at the very least a folder called VIDEO_VTS.
If your recorder has made menus for you, I doubt you can change the widescreen flag on the menu itself without knocking the menu selection "buttons" out of allignment, but the main video is a doddle. Each recording will have one or more files running sequentially in the form VTS_01_0.IFO. Open each one in turn, and in the bottom window in IFO edit double click on the first Video line under Title Set (Movie) Attributes, eg Video: MPEG2 720x576 (PAL) (PAL 625/50) (4:3)
Under Aspect Ratio, select 16:9. You should be able to leave everything else as it is. Click on OK.
Now click on Save, and overwrite the original IFO file. When asked if you wish to make a BUP (backup), select Yes.
Now just burn the VIDEO_TS folder and all of its content on another disc. Job done !
Good luck with it... -
