  1. I purchased a SSF-M2 from Hong Kong. It is a hand held player with 4" LCD. The instruction says it plays mpeg4 videos. I found out that the CD that comes with the package was bad when I return home to Canada. I have no idea if there is any sample clips on the CD. I emailed the support center and wa told that I can use virtualdub to create file with the rigth format and play them. I used virtualdub and create an mpeg4 clip. the player keep saying file open error. I was wondering if there are many versions of mpeg4. Is there any standard mpeg4 samples. All I want to know is if my player works or not.

  2. I didn't know this portable device before. I've read some pages on the web, but I'm not sure about the problem.
Yes, there are different profile in the MPEG-4, and they are ASP and AVC.
Your device supports ASP, and it say (in the documentation on their website) that it support Divx 3.11, 4 and 5.03.
There also different level in the MPEG-4, and I think that you should use the simple profile @ L0, or @L1, with the XivD encoder, or you can use the Handheld profile with the DivX encoder the prolem is that you should use DivX 5.0 and not 5.2, if their documentation is O.K.).
Anyway you can't reencode the video with the built in encoder of your player?

    DivX 4 was I think only SP and DivX3.11 isn't exactly MEPG4.

Sounds like it supports MPEG4 in an avi container. There are various DivX test CD's for testing hardware DivX/MPEG4 players. You might want to try one of those.

  4. Yes, DivX3.11 isn't iso MPEG-4 compliant, if I'm not wrong is just an hacking of the M$ MPEG_$ V3 encoder.
In the website they write DivX 5 SP (a question:does SP stands for "simple profile"?).
This player seem to support only AVI for the MPEG-4.

  5. You can also try PocketDivXencoder, probably the resultant file should be compatible with your device, but I don't know if you should use the mobile phone profile or the PocketPC profile, your device has a strange resolution. Try both of them!
    Cheers

Yep, SP = Simple profile. I think that the DXN handheld profile is SP anyway, so I guess you would be ok with that. But yeah, libavcodec and XviD should also work.

  7. I finally received a sample from the manufacturer and it works. It is a avi file ( or at least the file extension is avi). Is there a way to find out the exact characteristic of this sample so that I can make my video clip the same. This way I can be sure that my clip will play on the device.

Two useful apps would be MPEG4Modifier and GSpot.
