    I'm running OS 9.2 on a power Macintosh G3.

I looked at the How To section and couldn't find what I was looking for.

Anyone know how I can Convert a WMV file to a Mpeg...or what software I should get to do this?

    Thanks so much!

I think you need to upgrade to OS X before you do anything.

OS X has a program called Fourty-TwoDVD-VXPlus that will do it.

    there is also ffmpegx.
But yes, OS X is essential.

So far no known software for OS 9.x to do it. BTW, OSX is much faster than 9.x on G3, if it has enough memory. You can get PC-100 DIMMs (used) really chip today. Improves your computing experience

There is software available for OS 9 to convert wmv to mpeg-1, but it is commercial. Discreet's Media Cleaner Pro 5.x will convert Windows Media to MPEG-1. The G3 version of BitVice, and MediaEdit Pro (reasonably priced) will output MPEG-1, and if there is a demo available you can try to see if either will read Windows Media Files.

Do you own a 5.x version of Toast? Try dropping the wmv file to do a VCD convert and see if the file is read. Version 2.x of iMovie will export to MPEG-1 if Toast is also installed, but doubtful if it will import Windows Media Files.

Upgrading to OS X is a good idea, but if the G3 you own is the beige model (no firewire or USB) then upgrading the OS can be a complex procedure. But a blue and white G3 is virtually identical the first PCI G4, and OS X should install perfectly (the firmware may have to be upgraded).

    Good luck

I forgot that. Have used it, it's damned slow even in G4 and G3 doesn't have Altivec, so it will be even slower. The version I tried, was really unstable, if I left it encode overnight, it had always crashed. Have heard about stability problems from othe users too. My opinion, waste of money. Better to get OSX then and use ffmpegx, or other commercial or free tools.
