  1. I’m trying to send a small video clip of a Kindergarten program over to the girl’s father in Iraq. I converted the tape to a DVD and edited it with TMPGEnc Author to a VOB file. I first thought I could convert this to an MPG but TMPGEnc Plus has the audio missing and I can’t get it to work. The clip plays fine, the sound is there; I can play it with Shrink. Plus just leaves out the audio.

Any suggestions? Changing the extension to MPG makes it unplayable. Is there some way to get Author to output MPG? Is there any other combination I can send him that will include a player that will be certain to play the clip? Right now I am tempted to bundle Shrink and the VOB must it can’t be that hard.

    Thanks Much.

  2. If you managed to convert the tape to DVD, why not stop there and just send the DVD?

I'll bet your audio is AC3 and you don't have the AC3 plugin for TDA. You can still use TDA to author, you just won't hear the audio until your project is complete on disc.

If you intend to upload or eMail the video file, I'd suggest using Windows Movie Maker. It will convert your MP2 file to WMV. WMV may not be as good as some of the other formats, but you won't need to include a special player. (This assumes your friend has Windows Media Player already installed.)

  4. Epicurus8a got the part I forgot to mention; I will be emailing the files. I doubt it is AC3 as it just shows up as stereo when I looked at one listing, but maybe TMPG changed it somehow. It was just recorded with a microphone. You are probably right though. Kind of ridiculous that home made stuff winds up requiring a new add in.

I'll try Movie Maker. Thanks for the tip. It didn't show up when I looked for VOB to WMV conversion.

  5. No luck. When I change the VOB file to mpg so movie maker can import it, it plays with nothing there. Something essential is in one of the other DVD files I guess. The odd part is that the DVD files play back flawlessly. I probably will just email the files along with shrink. At least then I will be assured he has a player.

Try Gspot to determine your audio (and video) format.

Here's a link to some other methods to get your VOB converted back to MPEG2.

I often use DVD Decrypter (ISI Mode/no file splitting) to get one large VOB. Then I'll use Womble MPEG Video Wizard to edit the file and create a MPEG2 file. MVW comes with a 30 day trial period.

    Good Luck!
