I recently downloaded a few eps of a TV show. I think they were ripped from DVD because instead of being a .mpg or .avi, there was a folder for each episode that contained a bunch of files with .r01, .r02, .r03 etc. How can I compile these into an AVI or MPG? Any help appreciated.

Sounds to me like winrar compressed files, they usually are compressed to several files (easier for downloading) install winrar and try opening one, you will need the full set though that was compressed including the main header file.
I could dance with you till the cows came home..... on second thoughts i'd rather dance with the cows till you came home.

Sadly, RAR is the archival format that's customary for exchanging large chunks of data online. I believe the algorithm is proprietary, as there are no GNU tools for handling RAR files. So you're pretty much stuck with trialware (WinRAR). If you encounter any problems with the extraction, you will probably also need a parity tool and the par or par2 files.

I ditto what the rest say.
Use WinRAR, and open the first set of the file, r01. From here, you can extract the whole video from WinRAR.
