  1. I have some wmv files which play fine in normal speed, but if you try to skip ahead or move backward in the video file (during playback), then playback stops, pauses or stutters. I have other wmv files which do not have this problem.

I have tried converting the files to other formats (avi & mpeg) in particular and the problem is gone, however the new files are anywhere from 3 to 20 times larger in size.

My question is why do some video files stutter or pause for several seconds when you try to skip forward or backward during playback?

Also, is there a way to fix this problem w/o converting the file to another format (the way you would edit brightness for example)?

They could be incomplete. Try playing them with mplayer and see if they seek any better.

Sounds like the files don't have proper indexing or the indexing is screwed up.

You could try checking/repairing the files with asftools.
