  1. I made a divx slideshow that I want to hand out to a bunch of people and I want it to autolaunch and play when inserted. What is a good free player that can run from the cd, in case someone doesn't have a clue how to play a divx file? I'm looking for something that doesn't need to be installed, but instead just runs when you insert the cd.

VLC (Video Lan) might be your best bet, I believe it has most codec (including divx) built into it.

You would need to set up the CD to auto run VLC, or have instructions for the person to open VLC, then the file. I have never done this, but I am sure it is possible. Do some searches for autorun cds or such.

  3. VLC does work standalone, but I cannot figure out how to get the file to launch and open with VLC. Does anyone know how to do this?

Media Player Classic might be another app, as I *think* it uses its own inbuilt codecs.

See https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=248279 for a description and samples of what I was able to do with MPEGs.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Media Player Classic has some built in decoders, not anything to decode DivX though. Good thing is that it can load external filters without the need to register them. Never tried it with DivX though. XviD works fine, but it requires a registry entry before it decodes DivX.

Personally I would go with mplayer. Use a build compiled with cpu runtime detection and just have it open full screen. Insert CD, slideshow plays, player closes. No need for any interface. The users can just hit escape if they want to exit.
