Helping my friend out here, he hasn't given me all the details of his prob, but this is what i know so far.
He's trying to convert /compress a file with a *.ts extension to an avi/mpg format to no avail.
I would like to know what's this transport stream format? Some kinda HDTV format? I dun use HDTV so I can't relate to it.

Yes it's most likely a transport stream for a digital TV capture, and it can be either a Standard Definition or High Defintion capture.
It contains an MPEG2 Video stream and Multiple Audio streams, so you need to use a tool such as PVAStrumento to demux the streams. Then you can use any of the usual encoding tools to convert it to whatever format you require. -
convert from ts to avi with autogk, dvx
convert to mpg with hdtvtompg, pvastrumento, projectx
