The only thing I do is set the 'Target Size' in Preferences to 4364; That's 100MB below the default to allow for media differences.

If it's still too big, you either have to shrink more or get rid of some extra files. If it's really too big and you don't want to give anything up, then two discs or a dual-layer disc.

snitzle_iii, if you mean setting Target size below default, that's just insurance against a bad disc. Most discs that fail have problems towards the end, or the outside edge, of the burn. Reducing the size stays away from that area. I use good media, though. Never had that kind of failure.

  5. berserk559 can you please explain the process you are using from start to finish so we can get a better understanding of what you are doing.
It sounds to me like you either have it set to no compression or you may need to remove some extras to make it fit.
What is the movie you are trying to backup ?

  6. well like i say, when i hit open disk to to analysis the Dvd(BLADE TRINITY) it will analysis the DVD to 100% and when i hit backup a screen will pop out that the current DVD size is too big! if you continue, you may not be able to burn the resulting files, so what am i doing wrong? i haven't modified anything on Skrink... what do u guys usually do...thanks..

  7. OK, I havent got this movie so I cant try it out.

    1) When you open the disc in shrink what does the compression settings say for the whole movie - highlight the movie name under the DVD structure tab on the left and then read off the compression setting on the right.

    2) You could adjust the compression settings for each part of the movie, ie menus, movie, extras etc by selecting Custom Ratio and compressing to the max.

    3) You could remove the menus, trailers, extras and non-required soundtracks and have a main movie backup only - you need to select reauthor to do this.

    4) You could split it across 2 discs - but the menu structure will be broken.

I'm guessing this is probably rather a large DVD and therefore Shrink is having a problem compressing it enough to fit on one disc.
You could always try Dual Layer discs, though these are still pricey.
I would suggest checking out the guides section, there are plenty of guides about DVDshrink and also at dvdshrink.info.

I personally only ever backup the main movie but I use a slightly different method to remove the bits I dont want - I wont go into detail cos I dont know how advanced you are yet.

Let us know how you get on - by the way have you had success with shrink and any other backups yet or is this the first one.

I know you say you havent adjusted any settings but it may be worth checking your DVD output size - select Edit, Preferences and a new dialog box will open. Check your DVD target size is DVD-5(4.7GB).

  8. run dvdshrink on the disc and save the output on yourhard drive. then open up the outputted file in dvdshrink and shrink that as needed. so basically you are shrinking twice, but it gets the job done.

  9. Hey MAWMark I like that idea, but does the double compression give poor quality ?
The reason I ask is, as I mentioned in my previous post I only backup the main movie not the whole disc, so I have never had to deal with the problem that berserk559 is experiencing.
I would like to know your thoughts so I and berserk559 can get some idea of the quality you might get by using your suggestion.
I may well try this myself just out of interest but I need to find a movie big enough to test it with first !

When I have had this happen with DVD Shrink, I have deselected unneeded sound tracks and language subtitles etc. and have always found that it would fit after that. I suspect that the extras aren't taken into account when Shrink calculates the necessary compression. If there is more than the typical amount of extras, it doesn't all fit.
