What is a good Video format converter program for the Mac OSX?
I need a program that wil convert my avi ( not divx) files in to DVD format, so I can play them on a standard DVD Player. Any Recommendations?

Toast doesn't convert video formats...or does it? anyway do you know of a program that i don't have to pay for? Shareware in other words....I have iDVD 5, but i dunno if that converts, if it does, i need detailed instructions on how to do it.

    Try mpeg2works ($10 shareware from versiontracker.com).

I'm not certain it'll do exactly what you want, but it's free to
    find out.

Ah, be charitable. Assume he meant free to try out.

and to add to Dan's, then go and download the 3ivx plug-in, and the divx 5.21 plug-in.

oh,wait, divx 5.21 is broke under QT 7/Tiger..
just get 3ivx for now to play .avis.

It's not. I installed it when I first got my Tiger and it's still running fine under 10.4.1

Makmic, I downloaded ffmpegX, and it seems to work, the only thing is when i open and drag a file into the program and it has an arrow in the 'To" section I click on the arrow, and it gives me options on what I need to encode my file to. Here is the option list:
    .MOV mpeg-4
    .MP4 mpeg-4
    H264
    XviD mencoder
    XviD ffmpeg
    DivX mencoder
    DivX ffmpeg
    3GP
    PSP
    DV
    SVCD mpeg2enc
    SVCD ffmpeg
    KVCD
    DVD-lo
    DVD mpeg2enc
    DVD ffmpeg
    MPEG-TS
    KDVD

that's all of them. which one should I select to make my files work in a standard DVD player?

    Nice Joke terryj.

neko_chan, use any of the "DVD xxx" presets, (DVD ffmpeg is my prefered choice). Look at the tutorial
    http://homepage.mac.com/major4/dvd_sub.html
where the process is nicely described.

    Enjoy !

    Makmic...what's the joke?

He can convert his .avi to .mov mpeg-4 format in ffmpegx,
drag and then drop it into iDVD5, which he has, and be done with it and burned to DVD.

Clue me in...That's the simplest way for him
to get the file out and onto a DVD, using the software he has...since he says he doesn't have Toast 6,
he won't be able to successfully
    burn a VIDEO-TS folder....

My apologies terryj ! I missed your point.

But nevertheless, ffmpegX can create DVD Disk image files from a VIDEO_TS folder (DVDimg button), which you can burn thru Disk Utility. So using "DVD xxx" format directly seems simpler than going thru IDVD and a second transcoding (if you don't need menu&chapters)

I must honestly confess that I don't use that ffmpegX's (and Moviegate's) functionality (I use Toast), but nevertheless, according to the specs, it should work...

    Apologies accepted makmic.

I figured ( or rather assumed via his post)
    that neko_chan was/is a newbie, who might
only know about using iDVD5, and not much else.

Neko, if you aren't a noob then you should follow makmic's
suggestions; if you are, and only feel confident
in iDVD5, and by your comp specs it looks like you
have a G5 1.8(?), then my steps should get you there
    in no time.

No. Roxio never has offered a demo version. What is it you need Toast to do? Are you the same as puchiko chan who started this thread?

  20. Ther was one of the British Mac Mag produce by Future Back late last year that had Toast 5.2 Light. I think. It the big one with two disk always on the front. Think it was Aug or Sep.

If you want Toast 6 there is a rebate untill Sept of this year.

Frobozz, no he is neko_chan, who expanded the thread
( or took it over) half way down.

neko, are you ready to burn?
if so, you could use iDVD5 or Disc Utility?
or like Fro said, are you trying to do something else...?

ok, i burned my files on a DVD-R. now, they won't play on my dvd player. what I did was I used ffmepgX to convert my files to dvd ( I chose DVD ffmpeg in the target menu). After I did that, it gave me files with an AUDIO_TS and a VIDEO_TS in each one. I extracted the VIDEO_TS files in the folder only, and burned those onto a disc. now, when I put my DVD into my DVD player, it treats it like a DVD, and by that I mean, it doesn't say incorrect disc anymore up on the left hand side of the TV screen. but it just says DVD. And then it should play but doesn't. same thing happens in my Apple DVD Player on te computer. I put my disc in...it opens the Apple DVD player automatically, but nothing plays...I think I'm close. Maybe I'm doing something wrong....anyway, I hope that was a clear enough explaination.

It sounds like you didn't use DVD Imager (mentioned earlier in this thread) before burning your DVD. Apple's Disk Utility does not create the UDF format required for video DVDs. DVD Imager creates this format in a disc image that can be burned properly with Disk Utility.

I didn't really use any application. all I did was create a new burn folder, put my files in, clicked on burn on the upper right hand side of the window, and it burned it for me. I burned the VIDEO_TS files only though, but before, I burned the whole file, but it said incorrect disc, so I went with the video_ts thing instead.

Ok, so you created a folder on the desk top, put BOTH
the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders in, and burnt the DVD

( by dragging the folder on the desktop to the trash which turned into an eject button)

    right?

You got everything right except you have to use Disc Imager
first, then burn that disc image it makes, like Fro said.
This is a known flaw in Disc Utility, which is why
we usually reccomend going out and buying
Toast Titanium 6. Its much easier to
use with VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS folders.

I only put the VIDEO_TS folders in not the AUDIO_TS. if i add the AUDIO_TS, will it work by doing it the same way i explained?
And if I get Toast Titanium 6, will I have to use Disc imager? or any other application?

You MUST use DVD Imager first before burning your DVD, or you MUST use Toast because that's how you'll get a UDF-formatted DVD. Including the AUDIO_TS folder may make the disc more compatible with DVD players, but the critical issue is that it is UDF format.

There is a clear explanation of this on the DVD Imager page here:
    http://lonestar.utsa.edu/llee/applescript/dvdimager.html

    It is freeware.
