I would try Divx. I never use Windows Media Player. I also use WinDVD for playing DVDs and MPGs.
Some days it seems as if all I'm doing is rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic -

Holy Moly! That's too many codecs jammed together, many of them obsolete already.
You only need following installed: Divx5.21, Xvid, ffdshow, AC3 filter, OGM and Matraska filters, plus QT and RM. And use Classic Media Player. I have yet to meet a format this combo couldn't handle!
Stay away from codec packs. They are nothing but trouble. -
Mabey I am just unlucky, but I can never get FFDshow to work right. It always mucks something else up.
I use Media Player Classic or The Core Media Player (TCMP), DivX, Xvid, ogm/matroska, quicktime alternative, real alternative.
(TCMP installs support for ogm, AC3, matroska - v1.0.3 I think.) It can also install FFDShow (whichever version is included, though I usually deselect that option).
It could also be that I don't have a clue what I am doing with FFDShowSome people say dog is mans best friend. I say that man is dog's best slave... At least that is what my dogs think. -
Newer installers ask you what video and audio formats you want ffdshow to handle as well as some of the audio/video filter options. Really no need to setup ffdshow afterwards that way.
But yeah, ffdshow is a bit of a complicated beast. Kinda has to be when it supports as much as it does.
