I would try Divx. I never use Windows Media Player. I also use WinDVD for playing DVDs and MPGs.

IF VLC doesn't work, then it isn't a dshow issue.
    Perhaps directx got messed up?

which codecs did you install? try uninstalling those. Did you use a codec pack? (I hope not!) - If you did, uninstall the codec pack, or better yet, all codecs, and reinstall. You could also try loading a restore point (if you have system restore enabled).

  7. Holy Moly! That's too many codecs jammed together, many of them obsolete already.

You only need following installed: Divx5.21, Xvid, ffdshow, AC3 filter, OGM and Matraska filters, plus QT and RM. And use Classic Media Player. I have yet to meet a format this combo couldn't handle!

Stay away from codec packs. They are nothing but trouble.

Well technically. XviD can decode DivX, ffdshow can decode both as well as AC3. So no need for AC3Filter either.

So from your above list you only need ffdshow and ogm/matroska splitters.

Mabey I am just unlucky, but I can never get FFDshow to work right. It always mucks something else up.

I use Media Player Classic or The Core Media Player (TCMP), DivX, Xvid, ogm/matroska, quicktime alternative, real alternative.

(TCMP installs support for ogm, AC3, matroska - v1.0.3 I think.) It can also install FFDShow (whichever version is included, though I usually deselect that option).

It could also be that I don't have a clue what I am doing with FFDShow

Newer installers ask you what video and audio formats you want ffdshow to handle as well as some of the audio/video filter options. Really no need to setup ffdshow afterwards that way.

But yeah, ffdshow is a bit of a complicated beast. Kinda has to be when it supports as much as it does.
