background info: I'm trying to get equipment to start working on capturing and cleaning up some old vhs tapes to save them on DVD.

the tapes are anywhere from 4-10 years old, all recorded on EP, and many are copies of copies, so I know that the best i can do won't be all that great. I'll be capturing using either a set-top DVD recorder or straight into my PC (gonna try both and see which works better for me).

I've been offered a trade for a 4 year old Panasonic PV-S7670 that equals out to about $60-$70. I can also get a new JVC HR-S2902 locally for about $100.

I know if I get the JVC and the quality isn't good enough, I can return it. If I get the Panasonic, all I can do is try to resell it.

both seem to have basic IQ improvement functions, neither has a TBC or detail controls from what I've found.

    what would you guys recommend?

    thanx in advance,
    dennis

I'm not fond of the low end JVC machines, like the 2000 and 3000 series. But they work, usually. Will not last more than 1-2 years at most.

I don't know much about that exact Panasonic.

I would buy the JVC and try it. If it works, keep it.

But you can also sometimes find better units like the SR-V10U for as little as $150-200 on eBay.

The 7670 is a nice unit. If it hasn't been abused, I'd go for it vs a cheap JVC. If you don't like it and it's still in good shape (and includes the remote), you ought to be able to sell it on ebay for about what you are saying is the value of your trade, if not a little more.
