  1. hey,

just wondering if someone could give me a quick answer on this. i'm sorry i don't have more info. basically, virtualdub will seemingly randomly close while encoding jobs. they are two-pass divx through avisynth. sometimes it closes during the first pass, sometimes during the second. sometimes i can just reopen vdub and restart the jobs and it will be fine, and sometimes it will close again. when i say "close," i mean that it is as if someone killed the process - no dialogs, no nothing. it's just gone. haven't gotten around to testing my ram yet, but i'll get on that now. running an amd athlon 64 3400+ with 1gb ram. let me know if you have seen anything like this.

    thanks.

I've seen VDub crash if a bad command is passed via AVISynth, but the fact that you said sometimes you can simply restart it and it's fine leads me to believe you've got something else going on.

On the PC side, make sure your not overclocking your cpu or gpu. Chances are if you had a memory issue, you'd be seeing other problems with your os, not just with your encoding efforts.

Make sure you have the latest version of the codec used to encode the AVI installed (both audio and video). Avoid FDDShow, as it can cause compatability problems. Use AVICodec to be sure you have the proper codecs installed (it also works with MPEG). You should also verify that the proper codec is being used to decode your content. Some codecs will often set themselves up as the default decoder for other codecs. A bad practive that often leaves you grasping for answers to odd playback issues. I use Zoom Player for this by playing the media in ZPlayer and then right clicking and looking at the FILTER PROPERTIES right click menu.
Impossible to see the future is. The Dark Side clouds everything...

  3. just letting y'all know that i figured it out: it was spybot's memory resident "ie tweaks" crap (the icon in the system tray.) disable that first if you have similar symptoms to me.

anyone have any idea why it was closing vdub? :P
