i've never burnt a dvd in my life, so im really clueless. i don't have a dvd writer in my pc and i'd like to know if its possible to convert an avi(divx) file to a svcd file and burn it(using nero) to a cd-r and play it on my dvd player? (it supports svcd). if the file is 700mb will it be bigger when its converted to svcd? cd-r only hold about 800mb so will i have to split the avi? is this complicated? should i give up now and save myself a load of grief?

Since you already have what you need, go ahead and make a SVCD. For a regular length movie, you will need 2 CDs.

You might go with DVD2SVCD. It takes care of most of the complex operations. It also splits the finished file for 2 CDs. You can use the trial version of TMPGEnc. If you are starting with a AVI, it needs to be a format DVD2SVCD understands. Some DIVX or XVID may need further conversion.

I'd leave Nero out of the equation, except for maybe burning. It does that fine, but not a lot more. (IMO)

And save up for a DVD burner, you will be much happier.
