  1. Last week, I purchased the JVC 9911 to transfer my old VHS tapes to the computer. While it fixed many problems found on my older VCRs, it unfortunately causes quite a bit of jitter and vertical rolling that is not found on the older VCRs <sigh>. DVWannaB and Lordsmurf have briefly mentioned that the Panasonic DMR-ES10S DIGA helps reduce vertical jitter. But what confused me is that Lordsmurf says the DataVideo TBC-1000 corrects most vertical jitter/rolling. DVWannaB also owns a TBC-1000, but in his experience, it did not correct his vertical jitter/rolling problems. They were only fixed after the purchase of the Panasonic recorder.

So I would like to know if anyone else on this board owns the Panasonic recorder and has good use of it as a means to stop the vertical rolling. I have been hesistant making the purchase because I would never use the recording function of the player. Initially, I was considering the TBC-1000 to fix the vertical jitter problem. But DVWannaB's experience proves that the TBC-1000 is not a guarantee fix for vertical jitter and rolling. So now I am very confused about what my next purchase should be and would like some input. Anyone??

Fixing vertical rolling & jittering is pretty simple , you need a TBC. AVT-8710 or TBC-1000 will correct that. The E10 Panny has a line TBC so it get rid of some but not all. The panny does have some good features. But I would invest in the TBC, Your problems will be eliminated. Also look at some of the Guides they are pretty good..... Hope it helps!!!

The ES10 does not do anything to jitter. In fact, sometimes it causes jitter. The redeeming factor of the ES10 is it's ability to clean up image skewing from unstable timebase.

Please note that the "TBC" may be a BS marketing terms for non-TBC filters, though still quite nice. It is reported to ACTUALLY be a couple of sync filters, similar to TBC, and that description does accurately describe the video repairs it does.

Go to Best Buy and use a credit card for the $199+TAX. Buy the ES10, take it home, and test it. If it works, great, keep it. If not, take it back. I bought this unit fully expecting to take it back to the store. But the filters made me keep it.

Though keep in mind the recording quality of the unit sucks as Panasonic always does, so I pass the signal on to better recording hardware. It's alright in 2-hour mode, but nothing longer. I need longer. I'm also not fond of the way Panasonic messes with luma and contrast.

Is that a 'messes with luma and contrast' because of the shortcomings of NTSC, or does it apply to PAL as well?

It's a shortcoming of the unit, not of NTSC. Whether it affects PAL units, I'm not sure.

I also have the DMR-ES10 and I like the unit The only problem I have is what was mentioned in this post - sometimes the unit causes some minor jitter on older, EP tapes. What can be done to fix this, if anything?

I have the JVC HR-9911U and a Hotronic AP41 - SF TBC ... they don't get along too well. When running the 9911's menu output through the TBC, the picture rolls. Tapes played back tend to have some sporadic vertical jitter. I've read a lot of these posts regarding the ES10 and have considered getting one to help with these problems. Any thoughts?

I suspect the 9911, which plays nicely through a TV or directly into a capture device, may be part of the problem. Other VCRs play nicely through the TBC. I also thought that a rolling picture and vertical jitter would be nonexistent with a TBC in the loop. Could the 9911 be causing this ... i.e., is the TBC basing the new sync signal on the JVC's, which might be a little suspect? Would external sync be worth a go? Anyone know how that's done?
