Hello, i recently purchased a dvd burner that came with nero6 burning software, i then downloded dvd shrink so i could make some copys, everything was fine for the first couple dvds, now everytime i use dvdshrink my computer will just crash halfway through the encodeing process??? i tried un-installing the dvdshrink and then reinstalling it, after that it worked twice and now its doing the same thing again everytime?? even when i tried re installing the dvdshrink again it doesnt seem to work this time. I also tried useing the dvddecrypter program and that doesnt seem to make a difference, it still always crashes during the encoding process and the when my copmuter restarts itself my desktop says" active desktop recovery" and my background disapears??? what could be causeing this?? thanks.

  2. Can you give us some specs on your PC, ie operating systems, service packs, etc.
Are you getting any error codes/messages ?

Sounds like a hardware problem. Overheating CPU or mad memory chips. The former more likely. Overclocked my box, and it went crashing as soon as I used some CPU intensive app regardless of having really good cooling (fans all over the place). Turned it down to rated FQ, and no problems.

  6. Or maybe you are running out of juice .. DVD burners require much more juice than CD-writers .. I had problems when I changed from cd to dvd.. same number of hard drives etc.. added extra juice and no more problems ....... now if only I can re-take the galactic council....
Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.

Sounds like you may have downloaded more than you expected. Virus maybe...........
Any message appears before crashing ?
Try control-alt-delete, what does your cpu % usage say when all this is going on ?

What cyflyer said. You may have a virus or trojan using CPU cycles. When you are doing any CPU intensive operations, you could be overloading the CPU and causing the system to crash. Check your CPU usage.

RabidDog is probably saying your power supply may be too small. If you have added a lot of PCI boards or new drives the PS may be overloaded.

mats.hogberg's idea is maybe the most likely. CPU overheating is a common problem with transcoding or encoding. If you can check your CPU temps through BIOS or use a program like Motherboard Monitor. It could tell you if your PS voltages are OK and if your CPU temps are too high. Memory can also be giving out, Memtest86 can check that.

Also, if you don't know what's in your computer, a program like SIW would give you a lot of information about the internals including hardware and software. http://www3.sympatico.ca/gtopala/about_siw_full_screen.html

Not trying to second-guess you, guys, just summarizing.

EDIT: CPU usage during encoding or transcoding is usually 100%. As long as it's not close to 100% when not encoding, probably OK.

  12. Mebbe too simple, but...

What has changed to cause problem?

    Check for adequate disk space
Check temp directory for too many files
    Do chkdsk on all disks

Just testing the theory, while still on-line, I start an encode. I show 23 processes and 100% cpu usage. You seem to have a whole lot more processes going on....? Trojan, Virus, ....working away in the background guys if he has so unaccounted for processes ?
One more question, what is your cpu % before encoding, and after you have been online for a while ?
