TDK has doubled the capacity of the first generation Blu-ray discs from 50 GB to 100 GB.
The Blu-ray Disc Association has standardized a DVD format where two layers of the disc hold around 25 GB each of data. TDK increased the number of available layers to four layers, which was not expected till 2007.
TDK, held a Tokyo exhibition of its technology where the company displayed its Blu-ray prototype. The prototype records faster than the current standard 72Mbps vs 36Mbps.
The company made the increase in storage possible by using a more powerful blue laser, and by making some changes to the material of the recording layer of the disc, said a TDK spokesman.
TDK said it would now propose its standard to the Blu-ray Disc Association for adoption.
With this new capacity it looks like more companies will start favoring this format over Toshibas HD-DVD, which can store a maximum of 45 GB.

Agreed. Both new formats sound great, but the HD format sounds to be better just because of the higher reolution. Even if it has a lower storage capacity, still whats it at now....45GB? I wouldn't have much to complain about if I could get 5 seasons of MASH on one disc
