There are some painters here painting the lobby in my office building and I liked the color. So anyway I went out to ask them for the color code and the guy asks me how big my living room is. I estimated and he gave me 5 gallons for free!
I told him to come back next week for a case of free homebrew Very Happy

flat, satin or semi gloss? semigloss is my choice for everything. congratulations on the free paint.

Flat for ceilings or areas that can't be touched, the sheen takes finger prints too easy and trying to clean it is almost impossible without leaving traces of the original mark or the cleaner. But it is the easiest to touch up.
Eggshell is what goes on most walls. It is kind of a cross between satin and semigloss. It's durable and easy to clean but the way that it drys makes it very hard to touchup without lap marks showing.
Semigloss is good for wet areas, moldings and doors. Easy clean and durable. There is latex semigloss, and the makers claim it to be as good as oil, but old habits die hard. If you are going with a semi gloss I think oil is better, but latex is so easy to work with.
Satin to me falls between flat and eggshell. Easier to clean than flat I suppose but not as tuff as eggshell. (I do like its sheen the best though)
And the best paint?
Why FREE paint is the best of course! Depending on what you got, you could have between $80 to $150 worth of wall coloring there! Offering up the home brew is a nice guesture, I haven't met a painter that doesn't like beer, and free beer at that!
Depending on how much of a color change you are going to do you may want to use a tinted primer or completly change the base color before putting on the finish color. Ask the guys that you got it from about some details. It is just that some colors don't cover very well. Like if you are trying to paint a white wall red you can go insane, the white just keeps comming thru and the same sometimes the other way around. If you use a pink tinted primer or go flat black before going to the red finish coat you will have an easier time. Experience can tell you where you may have these kinds of problems, but it may be easier just to ask the pros.
Oh BTW I hate painting! But it is what the customer sees, and the biggest items on the punch list before turning a job over.IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT? -
I think it's semi-gloss. I'll have to check for sure on monday. I left it under my desk. It's quite a bit darker than what I have now, It covered the walls at the office nice. Hard to describe the color. Kind of a greenish tan. Looks awesome.

Go get one of those roller screens to hang over the inside of the bucket when you start painting. You'll have to draw down about half the bucket but it's a hell of a lot easier than using those silly roller pans. Dip your roller in the paint and roll it on the screen and paint away! Grab an empty bucket from the contractors.

You know the routine I am sure, on how to paint, make sure that the walls are repaired, lightly sanded, raw spots primed, yadee yada. The only really good advice I would offer is to use good equipment. A Purdy brand brush is probally considered the pro choice. They are more expensive but you can tell the difference and with care should last a home owner a lifetime. Good luck, did I tell you that I hate painting?IS IT SUPPOSED TO SMOKE LIKE THAT? -

I just looked at their website. I had never heard of that brand. It looks like they cater to the pros though, should be good stuff. Have you done much painting?
Probally the biggest problem with eggshell is lap marks. Keep even pressure on the roller or slightly more on the leading side of it. What can happen is the paint oozes out a little on the side that has more pressure on it and it tends to leave a little ridge or line in the finish.
I ain't no painter, but I can do it. I often have to supervise our subs or do the final walk thru with clients so I have learned a little about it. The paint is all you see of a wall when it is done, just that thousanth of an inch finish, and I swear that you could leave the roof off of a building and there will be more attention paid to the paint.
