  1. Hey guys, I'm trying to make a 'CD Server'

I need some software that will put the exact contents of a cd (data normally) into a folder on a harddisk. So that I can create shares, and everyone at this business can access their cds over the server. I'm having issues finding good software for that. I'm looking for recommendations

You could create ISOs of each CD-ROM and then use a virtual drive to mount the ISOs just like a regular CD-ROM. Alcohol 120% works great for this.

Hmmmm... Windows allow you to do this with virtually no effort. Just copy the CD to a HD folder, and set the "SHARING" to your hearts content. Since your CDs are data normally, this shouldn't be a problem.

You may, however, have some issues with some software requiring the disc during installation. This is were the Virtual Drive comes in. If you use something like Daemon's Tools, you can emulate certain types of copy protection, and therefore, use the CD-ROM images.

  5. you think just copying the files to the HDD will do it?

Ya I know of Daemon tools, but when we got 40 cdroms archived, we would have to keep mounting/unmounting drives, and once setup, we'd like to sit it in a closet and not have to mount stuff for people.

If your discs are just data (and require no installation), copying to a HD should do what you want to do.

And for the ones that need the cd, you can mount up to 4 in Daemon Tools. Another way is to map network drives from the other PCs, which will treat the mapped drive as the CD.

As long as they're fairly recent (last 5-7 years), most software won't require the disc. That was a holdover from the "good ol' days", when we neither had the HD space nor the memory to house a CD all at once. Now, you can load a CD in memory if you want.

Its a virtual drive program that allows 63 virtual drives. I haven't used it so I can't comment on it's performace but just wanted to give you another option.

  9. Why not just copy all the cd contents to hard disk folders jim/dave/alice etc ? or are they music CDs? or original program CD's. ALso daemon does require mounting and unmounting of images, not physical CD's. Get a Bigger hard disk?
