I authored a DVD with TMPGEnc 1.6 which included a mpg and a VOB file as sources. The mpg section plays fine on any DVD player but the VOB section only plays fine on a Sony DVD player but on a Samsung DVD player I can only see "shadows" of the video made up of big pixels of dark blue colors and bright light green colors.
From this, I am assuming that the Samsung player is more sensitive to weak video streams or does not provide enough correction for these "defective" video sources.
The VOB file was created from an AVI file, unsing WinAVI Video Converter.
The question is, how can I correct this VOB file to play fine on any DVD player like the mpg file does? Is there a way that I can test the file to find out what problems it might have? Should I take the original AVI file and convert it differently (using some other tool or another format instead of VOB) before taking it into the authoring tool?
Thanks in advance for any guidance provided.

Use ifoedit to demux the vob back to mpeg and use that in tmpgenc dvd author instead.
You can't really have 'weak' streams in DVD. It's either there, or it's not. You may have a corrupt burn or a bad encode, but once it's there, that's it.Read my blog here.

Thanks guns1inger. I will give it a try.
When you suggest converting the vob to mpeg and using that in tmpgenc, is this because mpeg files are "handled" better by this tool than vob files are?
Still, I don't get why the mpg source plays fine but the vob source does not play fine on the samsung player. -
winavi converter seems to be used by a lot of people to create vobs prior to authoring menus. And in many cases these people end up having problems with them. I don't use it, so I can say it is fully compliant or not, but as a general rule, you are better authoring with mpegs (program or elementary) rather than vobs. The vob contsruct can contain much more than just the movie, which increases the likelihood of something going wrong.

There is a tool that allows the decompilation of avi files , but I dont recall it by name right now , but if the avi is not compressed using a propriety codec such as asf , why dont people open the avi with virtualdub and frameserve to bbmpeg to generate the m2v (video stream) , as for the audio , from virtualdub , full processing , check conversion , make sure its 48.000 , sav as wav , convert it using besweet , from wav to ac3 , and use muxman to mux the m2v with ac3 to create a brand new vob file .
It certainly avoids particular video viewing issues .
As for mixing such files , its not really possible , as the mpeg would still need to be converted in order for the dvd too be burned compliantly .
You could do the same thing as I mentioned above , but use virtualdubs filters to place the video of the mpeg in the middle of a black area that matches the vob files size .
Almost all products that perforem dvd authoring have issue's if they dont match size , and this also is for audio .
I have only seen mixed files on one dvd before , and the company that did this have never done it again stating issue's with the original idea .
I have been tinkering in pgcedit for some time , and it's the only tool that dosent complain about me mixing nstc and pal titles onto a single dvd , but I always make sure my audio matches in every title . every program apart from pgcedit , complains and wants me to convert them to suit the given project at that time .
If you want a tool to convert nstc too pal and vica a versa , you cant go past ulead videostudio , it has never had any problems converting these or game previews (60fps) to either format , and is perfect .
If its close , you might get away with it .
