if i bought a new mothereboard that supports sata and had 2 ide connections(one for dvd and another for hard drives) could i use ide and sata hard drives together

Yes you can.
I´ve set up my latest system with a mix of drives.
It has two SATA drives, two DVD drives on the second IDE connector and one Hard Drive on the primary IDE connector.
I have the OP Sys on the first SATA drive and I just had to set the BIOS to boot from that drive rather the primary IDE drive.
No problems.
