problems trying to convert .asf to .mpg using Mencoder &

[Oh, firstly I should mention that I'm on a Mac, maybe this should also be posted in another section]

Tried viewing .asf file with MPlayer OSX 2 but file does not open no matter which way I try. Then, in Mencoder OS X, I am given sooo many options; one thing which I don't see any options for is that it appears to be converting to/saving as an .avi file but what I really want is a QT file (preferably .mpg, or .mov). Can someone guide me through the process and/or tell me what I'm doing wrong? Thanks a bunch.
